To be irritated when people say...'interesting first post'

Because quite frankly I find it slightly sinister. I am annoyed at Old boys' clubbishness of it all. Why shouldn't people write exactly what they want to on their first post? Or second or third? Is there some unwritten rule that says you're not supposed to be too controversial or opinionated on your first posting?
And no I'm not referring to any one particular response to any one particular thread-it's just something I've noticed come up a lot it's almost a cliché. So next time you feel compelled to write 'interesting first post' to anyone, please reflect on what you actually mean by it. And then say something a bit more original. That's all I have to say on the matter, and a very good evening.

I think it is often another way of saying that the OP is suspected of being a troll.

Isn't it code for 'this is a troll'?

The one thing I used to like about this forum was everyone was taken at face value - unlike another forum where everyone used to search your previous history (along with purchase and buying history) and any discussion was tempered with some bizarre reference to your trading history.

Yep. It's a way of warning other posters that perhaps they shouldn't take the post at face value.

And, IMVHO, it is pretty unusual for most posters to come on to a new forum and post something really controversial, so if you come across a post like that, then it's worth searching the poster's name to see if they are a regular or a newbie.

Code for for suggesting it's a goady topic without breaking talk guidelines.

It does break talk guidelines, and if spotted/reported then the post will be deleted for troll-hunting.

So next time you feel compelled to write 'interesting first post' to anyone, please reflect on what you actually mean by it

'you goady fucker'...is what i always read into it. And often they are right

When I say 'interesting first post', I usually mean in that particular nickname

You know so they can be a bit of a goady fucker, have a few digs at some of the regs...and then swap back to their every so luvverly 'normal' name in which butter wouldn't melt.

But 'interesting first post' is easier to type

MNHQ will occasionally delete you for saying that, as troll hunting is banned.

It's only said to a very small number of new posters. And can even be meant kindly, if a newbie has genuinely lit on a subject which has a history of controversy.

It means "This may not be blatant enough to report as trolling, but I'd like to suggest that it seems unlikely to be innocent in the circumstances"

People can post what they want, but a first post that is odd or on a very controversial topic looks suspicious.

But perhaps you're all too jaded and suspicious? And ready to suspect trollish behaviour where non exists?

oh come on now OP you know it pertains to goady or outlandish threads not just all threads

also it's about a goady or ridiculous first ever post - not first thread, but first thing ever posted on MN

if somebody comes on to a new website and the first thing they ever do it post a load of goady bollox ...well 99.999999% of the time they are a big stink troll

Well I've sometimes felt sorry for people who are pounced on for being trolls , when they seem authentic to me .That must be a particular kind of anguish. The poor things are suffering already , and then must suffer all the more for not being taken seriously!

cleofatra - there's an advanced search button that lets you search for posts by posters name.

However I'm now gathering this is quite rare.
