To be sick of London?

schoolrunner2000 · 19/03/2013 21:55

I know the old phrase..."to be tired of London is to be tired of life" and I'm not tired of life in the slightest, I'm just so annoyed at lots of petty things about London that never bothered me when I lived up North (up until last year).

  • I'm sick of the really rude and aggressive London drivers...what gives them the right to tailgate and cut you up and refuse to signal and generally drive like they want to cause an accident?! I have to actively avoid an accident at least twice every single fricking day in my way to work and back. That's 10 hours a week of being scared for my life...it's like I'm in the bloody army to avoid some of those cars
  • I'm sick of not being able to stay out after 12am as that's when the Tube closes and it's nearly impossible to get home otherwise.
  • The High Street is about 6 miles away and it's rubbish...Oxford St and the other big shopping centres are a nightmare to get through the crush.
  • I get so excited when I hear another old Uni friend is moving to London, only to find that "London" means anywhere within a 40-mile radius and actually it was quicker and cheaper to visit them on the train up North than it is to see any of them now.
  • Cashiers are really actively unfriendly at times and noone has time for a greeting, let alone a chat.
  • £10 for a double vodka and coke!! £4 for a pint!!!
  • Every single bar and pub I've been in Central London has been so full there's no room to stand inside, let alone get a seat, let alone hear your friend talk.

There's others...I'm just not seeing the glamour I thought I would see when I moved here. Thank God for London-born DP or I would have retreated long ago. I feel really disloyal now :\

So move?

PseudoBadger · 19/03/2013 21:59

Don't you have night buses? And I drive here several times a day and only very occasionally feel like everyone else is a twat. Sundays are worst. And drivers who wear hats.

WeightyKaty · 19/03/2013 22:03

It is a wonderful city, one of the best cities in the world. Anywhere has irritations. Loads of people would love to be able to afford to live in London so stop whining!

infamouspoo · 19/03/2013 22:04

swap? I cant afford to live in London but would love too.

BikeRunSki · 19/03/2013 22:04

I live up north and my last bus home form my nearest town with a "high street" is at about 8pm. I grew up in London and the only thing I miss is the public transport. Taxi? Bus? Walk ? Drive? Bike?

WeightyKaty · 19/03/2013 22:04

And get a one of those wonderful inventions called a night bus or hmmm maybe even a taxi?

idiuntno57 · 19/03/2013 22:05

I'm a Londoner born and bread.
So far she has been with me every stage of my life.

Beautiful town.

schoolrunner2000 · 19/03/2013 22:06

Taxis are horrendously expensive (I live 15 miles from the centre - but still in London). The buses take 2 hours to get to where I live. I won't move as DP is still studying here!

YANBU.

idiuntno57 · 19/03/2013 22:07

bred even

Bogeyface · 19/03/2013 22:08

YANBU London is a pig hole full of rude ignorant idiots!

EllenParsons · 19/03/2013 22:09

Yanbu if that's how you feel, but I love London and I don't really agree!

Whereabouts do you live if you are miles to a high street and can't get a night bus home?! I live in zone 2 north London and never really have problems getting home. Also disagree that all central bars are that packed really - some are, but I usually manage to get a table unless I am somewhere really popular on a Friday night!

schoolrunner2000 · 19/03/2013 22:10

Lol I'm Zone 5, maybe that's something to do with it. But I don't fancy paying twice the rent I am now for twice the pollution, even if there's twice the convenience...

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 19/03/2013 22:10

oh I see

you're in Bromley or some such

move to Zone 2 or 3. Tis luffly. The parks are full of bluebirds and wabbits and it's ALWAYS sunny. And you can get a bus home inside an hour or so

Smile
idiuntno57 · 19/03/2013 22:11

Did I mention that London can be all things to all people?

EldonAve · 19/03/2013 22:12

yes you need to be in zone 2

idiuntno57 · 19/03/2013 22:12

is Bromley actually London?

WorraLiberty · 19/03/2013 22:12

Oh great another London bashing thread...deep joy.

What you've basically described OP is many, many cities the world over.

And as for, "Cashiers are really actively unfriendly at times and noone has time for a greeting, let alone a chat."

I'm going to assume you accidentally left out the word 'some' because no-one can be that ignorant to tar them all with the same brush.

Don't let the train doors hit your arse on the way back up North...

WeightyKaty · 19/03/2013 22:13

I'd prob be miserable in zone 5 too. Not too much pollution in zone 2 and green space and not too full bars at the weekend.
Maybe go out not in the centre? Plenty of other places to try.

EldonAve · 19/03/2013 22:14

why are you driving for 10 hrs a week?

DialsMavis · 19/03/2013 22:14

I live in the burbs too..., I only moved 18 months ago and still love it. It may break us financially in the end and I really miss the beach and my family. But I have found the people to be mostly the same as anywhere else and the public transport to be about a million miles better than where I am from. DS is starting to develop that embarrassing West London Faux Gansta patois though, which is disappointing Grin

SpringHeeledJack · 19/03/2013 22:14

Bromley pretends it's in London

it isn't, of course

schoolrunner2000 · 19/03/2013 22:15

Harsh WorraLiberty! Londoners are a lot more assertive! :P generalises again

OP posts:
RFLmum · 19/03/2013 22:15

London is a series of little villages united by a transport system. I'd recommend staying 'local' to start to appreciate it.

DialsMavis · 19/03/2013 22:15

I'm zone 3 Smile
