Need a wardrobe update, spent 6+ hours on the high street today and found practically nothing (well bibs for DS and a pair of tweezers)

33, size 12, 5'3", big-ish boobs, hourglass shape I guess

In summary:

M&S: unimaginative, frumpy
Whistles: overpriced, looks good on hanger but largely shapeless
H&M: cheap creasy material, too young
Wallis: yuck, mumsy patterns, stretchy jersey everything
New Look: just, no
Phase Eight: phasing out your fashionable years
Fat Face: looks like chewed up rope
Joules: oh dear god shoot me now, childish patterns, reminds me of the sort of stuff the posh sister on peep show wears
Boden: (yes looked online) as above for Joules but add £30
French Connection: not terrible but too expensive
Zara: depressing sizing and don't have the patience to rifle through it all, also have to get trousers altered as short
River Island: makes me feel old, gives me a neon headache
Primark: no because I want decent quality and clothes that don't go a funny shape in the wash
TopShop: used to be my staple but I find less and less to try on every time I go in. Getting too old. Too many skimpy dresses and low back tops
Next: not very stylish, bit like the sort of clothes you wear when you want to l

Are you me? You have just described every shopping trip I've been on n the last two years. Short hourglasses are not blessed with wearable clothes and it's very frustrating. I shall be watching with interest.

secretofcrickleyhall · 16/03/2013 09:10

White Stuff?

BikeRunSki · 16/03/2013 09:11

Gap

I agree with you about all those shops, although I buy jersey tops from Boden because they do a proper scoop neck, are long enough and last for years. My favourite jeans come from Next. Other than that, Gap has become my go-to shop for style, cost and quality. Noa-Noa too if I am flush! (about once every 5 years).

mrssmartarse · 16/03/2013 12:33

Shop online Smile you can always post it back if it doesn't suit?
Asos, pussycatlondon, everything5pounds, lovesasha, glamorous etc Grin

Kookai, esprit and mange

freddiefrog · 16/03/2013 14:15

Do you actually know what you're looking for or just randomly wandering around looking for inspiration.

I never find the inspiration technique works and always come home empty handed.

I have a mooch on Pinterest or Polyvore first. I've found lots of bits and bobs in New Look/H&M, etc when I'm looking for something in particular

Mango and ASOS are good, and eBay

bonzo77 · 16/03/2013 14:15

OP, are you me? I could have said all that, though not as eloquently.

Has anyone had tshirts recently from boden? I heard on here they were a bit thin and hadn't washed well.

Eastpoint · 16/03/2013 16:16

Boden doesn't cut for boobs.

White Company do some good quality tops which are long enough to reach your waist & not swamp you - it's hard being busty & short. Avoid bib fronts as they tend to get stuck on boobs.

Asos have got a v nice printed fake wrap flowery dress £28, just like Armani Jeans version last year. Looks better than it sounds.

Gilly Hicks/Hollister size large should fit, some nice t-shirts/tops which aren't teenage. Their leg length for jeans isn't too bad either. If you go on line you can see what they have in their sale.

Montybojangles · 16/03/2013 16:30

White stuff, fat face, monsoon (good for big boobs).
I get a lot of work clothes from sainsburys, cheaper and some nice stuff.
Also if there's a debenhams near you the mantaray and John rocha collections aren't bad.
I think this season is pretty crappy fashion-wise. I've not seen much at all I like.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/03/2013 16:32

I second Gap. Ironically, the only place I don't get a Gap between my jeans and waist at the back.

XiCi · 16/03/2013 16:46

I'm a similar size and shape to you OP.

My go to's are French Connection, ASOS, Mango, Warehouse and bits and bobs from Oasis, Gap, DP. Zara and Oasis

XiCi · 16/03/2013 16:49

Sorry, that second Oasis was meant to read Esprit

Hopasholic · 16/03/2013 16:52

Warehouse? I've just bought two really nice tops from there. Ooh and mint velvet have some lovely things too.
