AIBU to think it is a shame that money appears to be the only incentive to reporting a crime on this scale?

I agree that what this man did was very very wrong, and he deserved to be punished. That goes without saying.

What I am surprised at is that over 20 years, no one reported him, no one, not a friend, not an acquaintance, not a single person who may have come across him, and let's face it, he must have come across many people in the 20 years he was on the run.
I accept that most of these people probably didn't make the connection between the man they knew and the wanted criminal, but AIBU to think it is a shame that it appears to me that this man was only reported and brought to trial because of the money the criminal's daughter in law stood to make out of it. Sad

Is it not enough to know you are doing the right thing? For the sake of justice?

IABU aren't I?

The DIL seems to be a total user and cow, but he does deserve to pay for his crime too. They deserve each other really.

Florida Phil?? I'll have to google that. Grin

kim I don't think it is a big deterrent, but perhaps his age was a contributory factor in the sentencing, I don't know.
I'm a bit dissapointed he wasn't brought to justice years ago, and maybe some of the money could have been recovered too. Chances are it's all gone now. Sad
