Parents bringing dogs into school grounds

My kids go to a school that you have to drive to and I've noticed recently that more and more parents are driving to school, parking, getting out their dogs and then coming to stand outside the school to collect their kids. Once they've collected their children they often let them play in the school grounds with their dogs. I have on occasion seen a dog crapping on the school playing field whilst parents chat and the children play.

AIBU to think school should have a strict no dogs rule. Not everyone likes them, the dog poo issue is obvious and I just can't see why people think a school is the right place to take a dog.

We do not allow dogs our school site. Not sure but it may even be illegal. It is up to school to enforce it though.

YANBU. It is unfair on people who are afraid of dogs and the school should not allow it (and the parents who do it should have a bit of sense and consideration).

As long as they are on a close lead and not poo is cleared up then I dont see the problem.

Most people with dogs wait at our school gate, they aren't allowed in the playground.

I take my dogs to meet DC from school when I can because the DC beg me to and it doesn't do any harm to get the dogs out the house.

Yanbu. Letting dogs run round and shit on the playing fields is shocking behaviour!

We have a sign on school gates and reminder in school newsletters. I would give name of parent owner of dog to school so they can deal with it. If it's lots then I'd make a general complaint.

Yanbu. Dogs are banned from our school grounds. It is strictly enforced. A few parents bring dogs to school and wait outside the gates. Afaik the school is part of a dog control area.

I cant see the problem as long as the dog as kept on a tight lead.

It's OK as long as there is a clearly defined 'dogs permitted' area (so those scared/allergic don't have to mix with them), the dogs are on leads, and the lead is held by a responsible adult.

If dog owners can't keep to rules like those (or whatever the school decides), then I think a blanket ban is needed. Which would be a pity for those who walk to school and don't have a car to leave Fido in whilst hanging round in the playground or wherever.

We take our dog into the playground while we wait for the boys. He's on a lead at all times (about 5cm max), he doesn't tend to poo at that time of day but if he did I would pick it up immediately.

He's been going to school since he was a 10 week old puppy and came into class for mat time. Most of the kids in my sons' years know him, they all love coming up for strokes/cuddles and he's very well behaved.

We asked permission from the Principal before we brought him in at first.

YABU - it depends on the dog. All poo should be picked up though.

School is not a sodding park. It really grips my piss when people are so self-entitled about their precious bloody pooches. Wait outside if you must bring dogs with you.

Dogs are not allowed on school grounds for health and safety reasons.

I don't see an issue if the owner is being responsible - poop should be cleaned up regardless of where it is, and dogs shouldn't be running around unchecked.

But I used to love my mum bringing my dog to the school playground to meet me, I was more excited to see him than my parents!

We also have a school dog. He really took me by surprise the first time I saw him wandering out of a classroom! Still, any poo issues are dealt with immediately...

What about diarrhoea? How would you stop your dog having the shots everywhere or clearing it up? And even normal poo leaves smears, how about tie your dog up outside the gate or take it to the park if it wants a walk. No need for it to be in school grounds.

I get more pissed off by lazy people who live within walking distance chosing to drive to school and causing car park chaos than a dog.

But if there is a dog it should be on a lead, not in the playground and definitely cleared up after!

No idea about the secondary schools the DSs are now at, but the primary had a strict no dogs rule too.

Although this may be because where we live there are a lot of Staffies (in Staffordshire funnily enough) and, while most are responsibly owned and pose no risk, there were one or two being brought in to the school grounds and being encouraged to growl & show their teeth because the owners thought it was "funny to see the kids scared". I kid you not. And the owners were parents of children at the school. Lovely.

Doesn't matter how 'good' the owner is about clearing up poo. You can't clear up wee, you have no idea regarding the general health of the dog (worms, toxicara etc) and children play there for heaven's sake!
Dogs aren't allowed in children's play areas in parks for very good reason.

No dogs allowed in our school playgrounds. Don't see why it would be necessary to take one in tbh.

YANBU, My DD's school, no dogs are allowed inside the gates, outside of the gates is fine, who the fuck takes a dog in the car, gets them out, then puts them back afterwards.

No dogs have ever been allowed in the grounds of my DC's school.

They even have to be on a lead if the owner is waiting outside the gates.
