To get cross with DH ignoring me?

This is semi lighthearted!

DH has many wonderful qualities but being "present" isn't one of them! He spends about 75% of his time wandering around in a complete daydream with a vacant look on his face. It's SO frustrating!! I have to say anything half a dozen times to get through to him and having a conversation that flows is impossible. If I ask him to do something he doesn't do it, not because he doesn't want to but because he hasn't heard!

Any tips you'd care to give me on dealing with it? Aside from kicking him :o
I can't be the only one who has a DH like this can I?!

Oh gosh no tips sorry - I am his female equivalent! Grin

I can have a whole conversation without really listening - i understand I am very annoying but can't stop day dreaming!

Yes, my dh is like this Grin It is very frustrating indeed. He also has an annoying habit of not answering my properly, so, for example, if I ask him where something is, he won't give him the exact location, but just say something vague. If I ask him the time, he'll say "half past", but not the number, so it could be half past anything Confused I have to repeat things time and time again until I get anything out of him.

I was going to start a thread about this. DH calls it 'zoning out' and does it constantly. He thinks it's OK. I don't. He also does a bit of light gaslighting, "you didn't tell me that". Yes, I did, about 20 times.

I find that consequences that affect him help. If it is good for him, I tell him once. He doesn't hear, tough shit.

Pleasesleep · 02/03/2013 19:24

I have started doing that a bit mrs " do you want a cup of tea?" No answer - I don't make him one! I then get " why didn't you ask me if I wanted one?!" I could kick him sometimes! Even dd has a "daddy tone" that she uses if she thinks she's going to have to ask several times.

Couldn't you stop if you tried really hard Katie?!

Hidden: by which time it would have been far quicker and less stressful to do it yourself!!

DD has one too. Unfortunately she is 2 and this is, "Daddy, DADDY, SCREAM" within 3-5 seconds. She has no patience with it. Grin

"He spends about 75% of his time wandering around in a complete daydream with a vacant look on his face."
How about filming this (on your phone?) whilst you repeatedly ask him a question? It might embarrass him into trying harder.

Pleasesleep · 02/03/2013 19:33

where that is an excellent idea! Perhaps I could find some way of playing it to his students after he has told them off for not concentrating?!

DH starts asking something and then just stops. OK you have my attention. What do I think of....? What?
Did you see.....? What?
Where is.....? WHAT?

He just trails off and if prompted has forgotten. It's a tad annoying.

I am the vacant not paying attention one though so I try to let it slide.

livinginwonderland · 02/03/2013 19:44

my dad does this. he zones out totally, so if i want an answer, i keep going "dad" until he either goes "yes?" or "what!" and then i know he's listening, so i ask the question, haha. it's so infuriating. he also has a habit of taking about 30 seconds to answer REALLY simple questions -_-

me: dad, i'm making a cup of tea, do you want one?
dad: ....
tumbleweed
dad: ...
dad: oh, yes please!

gah!

katiecubs · 02/03/2013 19:48

No sorry I was born like this - my family refer to it as being in 'Katie's world' when they spot I have zoned out. Sometimes I am caught just sitting doing nothing in a trance you see.

I wish I could stop it - it feels quite rude but I also do rather like my world Grin
