Many moons ago, I thought I might child mind. However it became apparent my house wouldn't pass muster as it has open plan stairs. Therefore the state deems it unsafe for other peoples children, therefore by process of deduction the state deems it fine to have your own children in a dangerous environment but not other peoples.

I doubt I'd tick the boxes to adopt either.

Just a whimsey question, would you be deemed fit by the state to child mind, or adopt? Would you get through a parenting test (if one existed) ?

I would (depending on ages minded I may need a stair gate). My house itself is quite safe and the garden's secure.
The risk assessments needed for all the fun stuff I do with my DCs would be quite onerous though!
