To think Waitrose porridge oats are crap?

I've tried varying the ratio of oats/milk/water, cooking slowly on the hob (at least 15-20 mins), cooking in the microwave, soaking the oats first, making sure I stir the entire time but the porridge still doesn't thicken up and I'm left with oats swimming in liquid, rather than them combining together.

I've been making porridge regularly for about two years and usually use Tesco/Sainsbury's oats, so I'm definitely blaming the ingredients and not the chef!

I agree! I prefer the cheaper oats generally. The expensive/bigger oats never seem to cook...

Forgetfulmog · 21/02/2013 08:26

I use waitrose essential porridge oats & have had no problems!

Yes - re the size of the oats. The only time I've had a degree of success was when I whizzed the oats up in my food processor first. Maybe I should cut my losses with the 1kg bag I bought and just make loads of flapjacks instead...

Asda extra special.

My fave oats by far.

Never had a problem with waitrose porridge oats. I cook them on the hob, and stir most of the time. I use just over a pint of milk to three or four shakes of the bag.

gatheringlilac · 21/02/2013 08:48

I've never had a problem either.

Could you be heating them too quickly?

Tailtwister · 21/02/2013 09:13

DH was moaning about the same thing this morning!

I always microwave my porridge. I have to use slightly less liquid with the jumbo oats, but so long as I bring it to the boil (high for 2-3 minutes) then simmer for 5 mins, it turns out fine.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/02/2013 09:17

I have never had a problem.

Is there a dodgey batch maybe? If you ring up or take them back to the shop they will refund.

I use tesco value oats: use a 1/3 American cup measure as a scoop, one small glass of water, 2 mins in the microwave and perfect every time :-)

DP and DS both love their porridge and they both think Waitrose essential oats are the best! DP cooks it on the hob and adds honey.

My dad works at the "porridge factory" near us, it suppiles more than 1 supermarket. The same product goes into the stores luxury and value packaging. Exact same. I don't eat porridge much and this doesn't apply to Waitrose but I thought it worth mentioning, if only to save you money.

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 21/02/2013 10:47

I think these oats are particularly chunky and "unrefined" - there seems to be quite a lot of husks mixed in with it, so perhaps I have bought a rogue batch. I can normally make excellent porridge on the hob and in the microwave, and I've tried all sorts of things with the Waitrose oats, but I still end up with a runny liquid with semi-hard pieces of oats (hmm, appetising!)

I like them, the ones that come in a bag. I always use half a mug of oats, full mug of water and a splash of milk and it always turns out just the way I like it.
