To think the Number taker on cbeebies is totally terrifying?

My Dp has just shown me something off cbeebies he saw today that shocked/terrified him into recording it- the Number Taker on Numberjacks. It's a mute fiendish, ghoulish, menacing man that seems to steal positive emotions from others- terrifying. Surely not something for the cbeebies audience of under sixes or aibu? Maybe it's just my preconceptions and my 18m.o DD won't notice his connotations (not that we force her to watch tv all day obviously!).

2yo DD hates Numberjacks.

Well, she did, until today. She demanded I put it back on when the numbertaker appeared. I was Shock, I thought they'd said undertaker!

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 15/02/2013 21:05

Can't believe they've put numberjacks back on, it's dire.

FloatyFlo · 15/02/2013 21:07

Yep, they all are. The puzzler reminds me of my old drama teacher, and he weren't very nice either. That pink spoon thing, what the total hell? Even the numbers are freaky looking. Hate the low budget poorly written piece of crud!

CarpeJugulum · 15/02/2013 21:07

My DS loves it

He asks for it first thing in the morning and all day ever after. I can quote whole episodes.

Wine helps... lots of Wine

Sandydunes · 15/02/2013 21:11

I was thinking the exact same thing today! Freaky white hat and suit. and menacing smile. It scared me...I can't imagine how scary it would be for children.

I don't like the pink spoon thing either...what's it called? And is there something called the brain drain or did I imagine that?

indyandlara · 15/02/2013 21:13

My daughter loves it but is terrified by the Spooky Spoon. A few days ago there was something spitting out pea green vomit everywhere.

TheCountessOlenska · 15/02/2013 21:14

Spooky spoon?

TheCountessOlenska · 15/02/2013 21:15

^^ X post!

FitzgeraldProtagonist · 15/02/2013 21:19

DS also horrified by spooky spoon but LOVES Numberjacks so am thrilled it's back on

franbella5 · 15/02/2013 21:20

So, this is something they've brought back/recomissioned- this is crazy talk. I know you have to have some kind if cultural reference points to find lots of things frightening, but to me he is inherently scary in the way that a fear of snakes isn't pathological, just nature.

My four year old hates spooky spoon, it's not appropriate for lo's is it? He likes the numbers though.

weblette · 15/02/2013 21:26

You can always switch it off.... Maybe 18mo/2yrs isn't necessarily the best age to watch something aimed at up to 5/6 yos.

Numberjacks is a great way of starting maths concepts with dcs.

carlywurly · 15/02/2013 21:27

Ooh that takes me back. ds used to run from the room and shut his eyes and cover his ears until it was finished. He's 7 now but I bet he'd still find it scary. Smile

TheCountessOlenska · 15/02/2013 21:29

Yes but it's on in the mornings on cbeebies - I thought the whole channel was for pre-schoolers?

I agree the maths concepts are over the head of my 2 year old. We turn it off actually - but I wonder why it is on at all?

haggisandneeps · 15/02/2013 21:37

I used to think the Number Takers song went:

'With his number sucker-upper
He's a number fucker-upper'

Had to google to find he's actually a 'mucker-upper' Blush

franbella5 · 15/02/2013 21:38

Hey weblette, I agree that introducing maths concepts is good, but the characters just seem inappropriate to me. Don't think dd has even seen it- was just on after she'd gone out with my dm. Sorry, that sounds defensive- not meant to be!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 15/02/2013 21:41

My DS who is now 8 was PETRIFIED of spooky spoon to the point that as soon as the show started, he would scream. Hate the show!

gimmecakeandcandy · 15/02/2013 21:41

My dc's love it - yes he looks dodgy to us but kids love it!

TheFoosa · 15/02/2013 21:43

My now 10yo STILL talks about how horrifying Numberjacks was, she's scarred for life

SeeBoobies · 15/02/2013 21:44

YANBU at all! Was thinking exactly the same thing. I hadn't seen him before today - dear God he was creepy. My DDs were both terrified. Shame as they really were really enjoying it - until 'he' came on and creeped them out.

petitfiloser · 15/02/2013 21:44

op are you mad? Grin

Lovecat · 15/02/2013 21:46

The number taker is horrible!

DD used to love that programme, especially the annoying green baby nought that just goes 'therrwo' (zero). And number 4 is a smug fecker.

varicoseveined · 15/02/2013 21:49

YANBU, my 5 year old was scared of the number taker too a couple of years ago. Who remembers Noseybonk from back in the day? Now he was one character I didn't like at all!

PearlyWhites · 16/02/2013 14:47

Yanbu my 2 year old dd finds him really scary but she is also scared of George pigs crocodile.

Megatron · 16/02/2013 14:49

Yep, DD was terrified of the spooky spoon. Terrible programme!
