Cheeky I know as I could google but I'd rather trust MN-ers than t'internet!

I have a terrible tickle cough, you know one of those stubborn buggers that comes to life as soon as you lie down?

I have been up all night bar three hours and it's driving me mad!

Any suggestions? Have tried counter medicine, lozenges, tea, the lot!

Thanks all in advance :)

Hot water with honey and lemon helped me as I'm pregnant and can't take alot of OTC medicines. Also gargle with salt water if you have a sore throat.
Get well!

BambieO · 14/02/2013 08:50

Oh I didn't even think of salt water! Thanks very much will try that now :)

Piriton really helps you sleep and stops a dry tickly cough.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 14/02/2013 09:15

Manuka honey? It's got antibacterial properties it's meant to be very good for you. Can't hurt.

Eskino · 14/02/2013 09:28

Any honey will do. Take a teaspoonful, hold it in your mouth to let it warm up and then sort of trickle it down your throat slowly. Also, drink lots of water. Try not to cough too much (if you don't need to), it'll irritate your throat more.

BambieO · 14/02/2013 09:29

I have had some Manuka honey in water but will keep persevering with it as I didn't know about the antibacterial properties.

Piriton I would never have thought of in a million years! I definitely have some here as DH suffers with hayfever so will root it out :) if that works i will definitely be doubling up on supplies!

It's awful, so scratchy. DS slept until 8 am as well, typical the day I can't sleep! Envy

So is the honey better 'neat' as such rather than in hot water?

Warm milk, teaspoon of honey and a pinch turmeric.

You could do my favourite, hot water, honey, lemon and whiskey, drink enough of it you will fall asleep.

Eskino · 14/02/2013 09:36

Neat. And the manuka honey is great, just sooo expensive. I'm a vocalist so use lots of the stuff.!

My mum is big on self-sufficiency and herbal remedies, she puts 'ordinary' honey (its all magical stuff) directly on wounds to heal them.

Buzzardbird · 14/02/2013 09:39

The Victorians swore by chocolate for coughs. Nuff said Grin

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 14/02/2013 09:43

I propped myself up on my pillows to help sleep when I had it.

IHeartKingThistle · 14/02/2013 09:52

When I was a kid my parents' remedy was a spoon with half butter, half sugar. Of course we had a lot of 'coughs'. What were they thinking?!

sashh · 14/02/2013 09:55

Coedine if you have it - it supresses the cough reflex

valiumredhead · 14/02/2013 09:55

The asthma nurse told me about Piriton - works a treat!

OHforDUCKScake · 14/02/2013 09:56

Piriton really? I have an abundance of piriton, and a bastard cough too.

Themobstersknife · 14/02/2013 09:59

Vicks on feet, prop yourself up in bed with loads of pillows, piriton as others have said. I always found Covonia great but sadly cannot take it any more.

valiumredhead · 14/02/2013 09:59

Worked my ds and me - fab stuff and makes you sleep too Grin

BambieO · 14/02/2013 10:15

I am definitely going to be indulging in the honey, piriton and Vicks- and since it's sworn by maybe the chocolate too!

I will let you know if it works, I am so intrigued by this piriton idea!

valiumredhead · 14/02/2013 10:19

I used Vicks too - it helps!

squeakytoy · 14/02/2013 10:20

i second piriton.. that is what my chemist advised, and it works, also manuka honey and lemon cordial is good too

BambieO · 14/02/2013 10:35

I have just taken a piriton, patiently waiting :)

It's working! The cough tickle has definitely subsided! Thanks all Flowers
