Never even thought of it like that! I suppose if you are brought up hearing the actual pronunciation the spelling doesn't register!

gerbilsarefun · 14/02/2013 10:37

I live in South Yorks, never thought about Penistone. We did once pass a village, on the way to Drayton Manor called Willey. We got out the car and I had my picture taken next to the road sign. It was 20 years ago Haven't matured much since .

suburbophobe · 14/02/2013 10:40

In NL there's a Burgemeester Fockstraat Grin

Also there's a village called Sexbierum.

And there used to be the Fokker Friendship aeroplanes.

MadonnaKebab · 14/02/2013 10:41

Road signs to nearby Wannaroo always have a T? added
Innaloo is also an odd place to be

Eskino · 14/02/2013 10:42

Eskino · 14/02/2013 10:42

And there's a place on the way to the Bridlington called Wetwang.

Does anyone else remember the 70's joke based on a TV ad slogan:

If Typhoo put the T in BriTain, who put the cunt in Scunthorpe?

GrimmaTheNome · 14/02/2013 11:48

If anyone on this thread hasn't come across The Meaning of Liff - you'd probably enjoy it. They aren't all rude but some of the names figured here have appropriate definitions (I vaguely remember wetwang).

ILikeBirds · 14/02/2013 11:55

I used to live near Knob Lick (missouri). Never ceased to amuse.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/02/2013 19:06

We went ski-ing at Blue Knob somewhere in pennsylvania

somewherewest · 14/02/2013 20:18

I love this thread, but then DH and I did once go slightly out of our way just to visit Nether Wallop. In Ireland we have the lovely Hackballscross and the aforementioned Muff.

TheOriginalLadyFT · 14/02/2013 20:23

Had to take a pic of Twatt in Orkney when went there

Am also a Yorkshire lass, good to see so many Yorkshire MNers - perhaps we should have a Penistone Appreciation Society Grin

Wetwang in East Yorks makes me laugh as well

TheOriginalLadyFT · 14/02/2013 20:23

Or Netherthong and Upperthong in West Yorks

Bunbaker · 14/02/2013 20:24

It poured down with rain when we drove through Piddledown Common.

Mandy2003 · 14/02/2013 21:20

You can guess what happens to a road sign I've seen for Pucks Hill Grin

wizzler · 14/02/2013 21:22

I am another one from Sheffield who never thought of Penistone as being remotely amusing!!!

wizzler · 14/02/2013 21:23

Eskino,,, there is a fab chip shop in Wetwang..

Silverlace · 14/02/2013 21:30

I used to regularly drive down a road called Butt Street. Someone had painted out the S...

Jackiewackytiddler · 14/02/2013 22:01

There's a village not too far away called Ugley - can't help but point out the Ugley village hall, Ugley this, Ugley that, tee hee hee. Never not funny Grin

BikeRunSki · 14/02/2013 22:04

There is a village near Halifax called Friendly. It has a Friendly Cricket Club.

Bunbaker · 14/02/2013 22:16

There's a suburb of Bradford called Idle. My dad always wanted me to take a photo of Idle Working Man's Club.

barnsleybelle · 14/02/2013 22:18

I live not far from there, the cinema rocks and there's a pretty awesome curry house there too!
