Imagine living in Penistone

Never even thought of it like that! I suppose if you are brought up hearing the actual pronunciation the spelling doesn't register!

I live in South Yorks, never thought about Penistone. We did once pass a village, on the way to Drayton Manor called Willey. We got out the car and I had my picture taken next to the road sign. It was 20 years ago Haven't matured much since .

In NL there's a Burgemeester Fockstraat

Also there's a village called Sexbierum.

And there used to be the Fokker Friendship aeroplanes.

And there's a place on the way to the Bridlington called Wetwang.

worse if your surname is penistone. the first 5 letters appear in the id number on you driving licence.. (or used to )

If anyone on this thread hasn't come across The Meaning of Liff - you'd probably enjoy it. They aren't all rude but some of the names figured here have appropriate definitions (I vaguely remember wetwang).

I used to live near Knob Lick (missouri). Never ceased to amuse.

I love this thread, but then DH and I did once go slightly out of our way just to visit Nether Wallop. In Ireland we have the lovely Hackballscross and the aforementioned Muff.

There is a village near Halifax called Friendly. It has a Friendly Cricket Club.

There's a suburb of Bradford called Idle. My dad always wanted me to take a photo of Idle Working Man's Club.

I live not far from there, the cinema rocks and there's a pretty awesome curry house there too!
