to think my friend is hypocritical?

Whenever I have mentioned anything about designer brands to my friend she has generally sneered and said "I don't care about labels".

Which ok fair enough. Some people really couldn't care less about brands. However she does sometimes sneer even if I buy something from All Saints or if I said some throw away comment like "I'd absolutely love to own a Chanel bag one day."

Whilst she was away on holiday she returned with a Prada bag, of course it was a fake and she didn't pretend otherwise, and it was her birthday this weekend and I met up with her tonight and she got some Uggs for her birthday, which she asked for and had talked about them for ages in the run up to her birthday.

aibu to think this is hypocritical?

If you really don't care about label you would have just bought a handbag with no name on it, or you would have got any sheepskin boots?

Two UGG threads in one day!] I am now wondering if I'm an incredibly fashionable hypocrite or just a fashion 'sheep' as my feet denote Confused Grin

tinygreendragon · 11/02/2013 20:43

I don't particularly care for most fashions or labels unless I find a function for them and I wouldn't make a statement of this either unless the question was asked. But for someone to make a statement "I don't care about labels" then to wear Ugg boots is hypocritical unless she really couldn't find a suitable alternative with no label (unlikely IMO).

BambieO · 11/02/2013 20:46

Re your friend, I think it depends if she got the offending items because she genuinely likes the style etc or if she got them purely because they are brand names. Ie would she have bought the bag regardless if name tag?

Sorry double post!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/02/2013 20:47

Sounds as if she likes particular things no matter what the label? All Saints are expensive for what it is but not designer, so I think she just means she doesn't like your taste, and is being snotty about it by assuming you are buying these things for the label not the look or quality. Which is rude, but not hypocritical.

pictish · 11/02/2013 20:48

Yes...we're all hypocrites. In one way or another. In some small way just like this.

MammaTJ · 11/02/2013 20:50

IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! All explained in three words!! Grin

gordyslovesheep · 11/02/2013 20:50

your friend is allowed not to like 'designer' labels ...or people obsessing about so called designer stuff

maybe she got the bag because she liked it and I wouldn't call Uggs 'designer'

FutTheShuckUp · 11/02/2013 20:50

Very pre school

PrettyKitty1986 · 11/02/2013 20:52

When my friend goes on about Christian L shoes, and how she must have these Versace jeans etc, I have on more than one occasion told her she's mental and what a waste of money to buy something just for a label. I've probably stated that I don 't care about labels at some point.
I do however have ugg boots...and a designer perfume, and a couple of (fake) designer bags.
I've bought them because I like them though...that is completely different to me than someone who hunts out specific things purely for the label.

willesden · 11/02/2013 20:53

Uggs look like slippers.

kalidanger · 11/02/2013 20:54

Blimey. Tell her UGGS are very 2008. And a fake handbag! :o

floweryblue · 11/02/2013 20:59

I don't like 'labels', I like things, sometimes they will have a label which actually puts me off the thing. But if the actual advert I'm being expected to wear/cart about is discreet enough or removable, I am willing to buy the thing, if I can afford it!

Dooneyoumug · 11/02/2013 21:00

and I wouldn't call Uggs 'designer'

Don't think I said that actually. But they are a brand/label.

I often bemoan anything Disney...particularly merchandising. I do a face (to myself) at people going to Disneyland. However we do have a handful of Disney movies we all love. The Jungle Book, Toy Story and Finding Nemo are favourites.

Dooneyoumug · 11/02/2013 21:02

All Saints are expensive for what it is but not designer, so I think she just means she doesn't like your taste

It's not to do with taste, as she will say - I like your jeans, where are they from? I'll say All Saints and she pulls a Hmm face, and then says why would I spend that much when you can buy more from Primark etc.

I know All Saints are not designer, they are just at the higher end of high street imo.

What's wrong with that? Confused

There's plenty of stuff I like but I wouldn't pay over 100 quid for them, which is what you pay in there.

Same with, say, shoes from Karen Millen. I love that place but the shoes aren't worth the price, and if my mate had a pair I'd probably like the look of them but pull a face at the price.
