not eat, despite currently breastfeeding?

DD is 8 months and EBF. I've had flu since Saturday and have probably managed 4 meals since then; I have no appetite at all and have been sick a couple of times after eating. DD is ill too and feeding lots. Will my milk be ok if I'm not eating or do I need to force myself to eat for her?

It will be find assuming you are not already seriously malnourished. Having said that you may feel a bit better if you can manage even a little food!
hope you feel better soon.

fine not find :)

Your milk will be fine. You will feel horrible though. Is there anything you feel like?

ReallyTired · 08/02/2013 14:16

If you are feeling really ill then its not unreasonable not to eat. It is important that you drink though, even if its just dilute orange squash. Otherwise you may experience more headaches from being dehydrated.

Your milk will be fine. You have to be severely malnourished for your diet to have any affect on your milk. The body really prioritises breastfeeding and you will only stop producing milk if your body is close to death.

I hope you feel better soon.

Your milk will be fine, but when I was bfing I did find that my expressed milk looked a bit more watery if I was eating very little.

I'd try to drink banana milkshakes and fruit smoothies rather than trying to force yourself to eat. And you need to make sure you have a glass of water on the go constantly.

alisunshine29 · 08/02/2013 14:22

I've been drinking loads, particularly milkshakes, but don't fancy any food at all. I've lost almost a stone and was a normal weight so wouldn't say I'm malnourished exactly. Feels bizarre having no appetite but I'm sure I'll make up for it when I'm better!

No it'll be fine. You'll feel crap but your body will prioritise your baby's needs over your own anyway.

You'll be just fine, my love!
Me and DS had norovirus when he was 13 months old. We both went right off food for a week. I made sure I was drinking lots (black currant cordial in fizzy water seemed to do the trick, as well as the odd jar or banana rice pudding as I recovered.
DS went back to being EBF for over a week, and we were both fine.
You're off food because digesting and processing food is energy-expensive, and right now you're prioritising getting better.....and BF-ing the next generation! Your body has got shedloads of resources, and don't forget you're having nutritious smoothies too.
Just keep drinking fluids, like others have said, and have a rest.

As long as you're not getting dehydrated or low blood sugar/dizzy you're fine. Babies are the ultimate parasite, the will literally strip your bones of calcium to get their nutrition. As long as you are safe from collapsing your baby is fine & getting all those antibodies to protect them from getting the lurgy.

You need to eat.
