Aibu to expect better from Tesco?

Was looking forward to a nice dinner of Jack daniels Marinated chicken drumsticks & thighs!

Got my drumsticks out of the fridge that i bought through online shopping with Tesco Fri evening.

Opened up the value chicken drumsticks ready to marinade with sauce & this rancid smell escapes from the packet, so bad it nearly knocked me out.
Dh had a sniff and he was nearly sickShock

Yes i know they were from the value range, but they didn't go out of date until monday.

So pissed off, short of cash right now & had to send dh out for more.

Aibu to expect to atleast get edible meat from Tesco?
It was rancid, it smelt like someone had shit on it Shock

i wouldnt bin it and would be taking it back tomorrow stick it under the managers nose for my money back. on a side note is it the only thing thats gone off lately? is your fridge cold enough?

Happened to me the last time I used Tesco. It was a whole fresh chicken and had 4 days left on the date. It was black underneath and smelled absolutely disgusting.

Fridge is working fine.
Shame i binned the packaged, i had to it was vomit inducingConfused

I'm going to shop elsewhere this week i think

have you a receipt? i'd still go in and ask for refund without the evidence. i mean you are hardly asking for a refund on a bottle of champers or some expensive face cream ... see how they deal with you.

my advice ? Drink the Jack Daniels and forget about the chicken! Grin

But we are too wasteful with food, I would have still eaten it. I feed alsorts of out of date, slightly iffy stuff, chicken included, to the family and no one has ever got food poisoning yet. I just cover it in cajun spices Grin

Holly! That is vile.

I don't bother with sell by/use by dates but I can tell when a chicken is well and truly off and not fit to eat.

i used to work for a supermarket and customers were never expected to bring back rotten chicken - have you the receipt?

You can't eat stinky chicken though? I agree about not going by the dates on the pack and actually having a sniff and a look before deciding something is gone off but if chicken smells bad, then it's off and shouldn't be eaten.

Email and complain. IME Tesco will nearly always refund a small amount if something has gone wrong with an online shop. They may have already taken it off the shelves if several others have complained too.

This happened to me with some M&S chicken pieces, so I don't think you can just blame the supermarket.
I think they can all get a bad batch in sometimes.
It's hard to take back too, as you don't want to keep stinky chicken around.
M&S refunded us with just the receipt as far as I remember.

Keep the packaging, bin the chicken (wrapped up several times!), take the packaging back to Tesco for a refund and replacement (don't accept just a refund). They'll need the codes on the packaging to track down the problem - probably either a faulty fridge or lorry.

OP, I think as others have said that the receipt alone should get you a refund.

Tesco are particularly bad for sending poor quality/very close to exp date when you do an online order, they send the stuff they know nobody would pick up in store! I had it loads of times with them (and others, but they are the worst). Stopped shopping there eventually. It's the worst supermarket IMO!

I've had bad mince from them as well as the chicken. I use Sainsbury these days and the dates on things are usually quite good. They did once send me yoghurts right on the use by date (though I'm pretty sure they would have been fine) and they refunded me and sent me a voucher.

I always expect the worst from Tesco's and nearly always get it. But it's our nearest supermarket distance and trafficwise. Tesco's are famous for sending almost out of date stuff on their online shopping. Which is why I don't use online shopping except if I really need to which is hardly ever.

I had bad chicken from M&S, I think it can happen anywhere, not just Tesco.

I had to ring Tesco customer service before Xmas for something and they were extremely helpful, I couldn't fault them. Try ringing them up.

I lived on tesco value chicken as a student, and froze everything the second I got it home for this reason exactly!

Holly that's awful and actually incredibly dangerous. You've been very lucky no one has been seriously ill so far. I have worked as a manger in catering for many years and chicken in particular is one of the things that must be absolutely fresh. It breeds bacteria very quickly and a nasty dose of salmonella or e coli can actually be fatal.

Sorry, just had to poke my nose in there.

This happened to DP and I a few times a month with Tesco. It's not limited to any specific fresh product either. We had uncooked chicken, pork, fish, scallops etc that was perfectly within date but completely indelible. Yes, we returned every single item, every time. Initially I put it down to the delivery van being an incorrect temperature or the pickers not picking and refrigerating fast enough so we stopped using delivery but to no avail. Rancid meat, still in date. I purchased a fridge thermometer in case our fridge freezer was faulty but it wasn't. DP and I have made a complaint to TESCO head office but it's been ignored. We basically received a 'phone call saying "you got a refund, and?" I guess they can't do anything about it as there seems to be an enormous fundamental problem with their meat and fish transportation and temperatures.

DP and I have not shopped in Tesco since. (10 months now) Hmm

Having food go off before the use buy date is not exclusive to Tesco, so shopping elsewhere is no guarentee.

However, if you ring them and give them the code for your receipt that the driver gave you on Friday they will give you a refund.

I opened a box of eggs from sainsbury's online to find 3 of them broken. I rang up and they credited the account. I'm sure you could do the same with Tesco. There's no need for a receipt or the packaging if you bought online as they have all the info.
