to not post cryptic status updates on FB but...

donate a few quid to cancer research instead.

Just got home from spending the day at hospital with my friend whilst she has chemo for breast cancer, to find one of my FB friends is urging me to post some cryptic nonsense about going abroad for X months. This supposedly raises awareness of breast cancer. If I don't do it apparently I am some sort of kill joy. I have no idea how this helps cancer research - but if you feel inclined take a few minutes to donate a few pounds instead.

Thanks - rant over - it's been a harrowing day.

I hate these nonsense FBI things. They don't achieve anything.

Well done for donating, at least you have made a difference! Smile

FB not FBI Grin

WorriedMummy73 · 01/02/2013 19:49

I HATE those things on Facebook! They do nothing to raise awareness of anything and don't raise any money either. People just click 'share' and then feel all smug. There seem to be an awful lot of posts starting with 'only my true friends/family will share this' just lately, as if we're supposed to feel guilty for not re-posting this nonsense. They are essentially chain-mail for the 21st Century and really, really piss me off. As autumnmum says, if anyone really cares about cancer research etc then donate some money or do a fun run or something. Stop posting crap on Facebook!

I hate those things

I've got one in my inbox asking me to share my bra colour to raise awareness of breast cancer - I don't see how me writing 'slightly greying white' in my status raises awareness for anything other than my inadequacies in keeping my whites white

WorriedMummy73 · 01/02/2013 19:57

The inbox ones between 'all the ladies' annoy me. Lately I've had ones about just posting a heart in your status (can't remember what it means) and putting some stupid thing about craving certain foods and a number of weeks (made it look like you were pregnant - oh the hilarity!) and the most recent was to do with a vegetable representing your birth month, or some such nonsense. And it's all 'don't say what it means!'. How is any of this even slightly amusing?

MarcelineTheVampireQueen · 01/02/2013 20:02

It's called slactivism, the lazy way to pretend you give a shit.

My favourite is the one where the doctor says he will perform a life saving op on a child but ONLY if the mother gets a million likes on Facebook Grin

Purple2012 · 01/02/2013 20:06

I hate them too. I never share/repost shut like that. I don't even do status updates and I very rarely comment on others. Don't know why I am on there really.

autumnmum · 01/02/2013 20:11

Thanks Marceline I've added a new word to my vocabulary.

It's good to know I am not the only person who hates these things. I suggest as a way of making these messages positive is that every time you get one you donate a pound (or more) to your favourite charity.

yanbu, I always post a general reminder to feel your boobs (or a friend's if she is receptive Grin) when these start going.

StuntGirl · 01/02/2013 20:32

I hate them too, I ignore like crazy when they come round.
