AIBU to be cross that my baby formula costs twice the amount of 'normal' formula?

Before anyone flames me, I have no problem paying to feed my child!

DS has been put on lactose free formula by our gp. He prescribed 2 small tins to try to see if it made a difference to DS, then said if I could buy it I was to. This is fine. I'm happy to pay to feed my child :-)

What I'm cross about is that SMA charge the same price for a 400g tin of LF milk as they (and the other bands) do for a 900g tin of 'normal'.

I just think its off that a company can charge a premium for a product and get away with it because they know that if its needed, people will have to pay it!

I'm not asking to be given it on prescription, just that the price isn't inflated quite so much. I guess it's just like anything else though, if a company can get away with it, they will!!

Could it be that the processing is more difficult and it requires more raw materials to make?

I know there must be some rational reason for it but its just frustrating.

Why are you paying for it in tge first place?

I used SMa lf with ds, this was 8 years ago mind, but I got 1 tin a week on prescription and paid for the other. This seemed fair as I was then paying the same as I would a week for normal formula. Go talk to your gp again, explain the costs and see what they say. I agree totally, it seems unfair that you have to pay double to feed your baby.

You should be able to get it on prescription. Three of my four dc had specialist formula on prescription from 3 weeks at the earliest and 18 weeks at the latest until they were a year old.

My GP prescribed 2 tins and when I asked 'if this milk works what do I do about getting more'? He said to ask the chemist if I can buy it and if I can I need to buy it. If I can't I can have it on prescription. Chemist said I can buy it and its 8 quid for 400g tin. ???

Go back to your GP. Get it on pescription.

I'm back at my gp later this morning for my bp - the condition of being let out of hospital after having DS was that I see my gp about my bp as it wasn't settling after a week in hospital.
I'll speak to him again today and see what he says.

The daft thing is, I'm not after a free ride, I just don't see why it should cost me (and other mums who need it) so much in comparison. Especially when things are so tight on mat pay anyway.

We got it on prescription, there is no way you should have to pay for it. He's just trying it on!

Ok if it was something for you and you could afford to pay yourself but you shouldn't have to pay for a food your baby needs as he is intolerant to other forms of milk

Pricing decisions are based on demand. Fewer people want this formula than standard, costs of production will be the same or higher, therefore price reflects these issues.
