Phone them & ask why.

British Gas are shit, that is all.

We have just switched to OVO, check out USwitch to see if you can get a better deal.

why not just phone and query it and offer a more reasonable amount. I did that with npower and they were fine about lowering it i.e. was paying £96, they wanted to increase it to £180, phoned them and the new payment became £125 (we were in debit so I knew the payment needed to increase, just not by quite that amount). The letter will have been computer generated so phone and speak to a person to sort it out.

Ha ha ha, clearly that is NOT all Grin

Get on the comparison sites and switch.
I was with them, paying £10+ a week in the summer for just hot water, on payg. Went away for a week, and somehow had managed to use all the money, even though I had switched off the combi boiler. Switched and paid tenner a month lol.
But they like to send them letters out. Be worried and do something about it. I occasionally get letters with they do sort everything for my ease, or some gumph, because apparently I am switching back to them.

absolutly con artists, i went from monthly to pre payment meter, they swapped my account so i couldnt pay my bill over phone anymore and took 3 months to fit my prepayment meter leaving me with a debt of around 300 as i had no way of paying it. i tried to argue it but with no avail i agreed to pay at 6 pound a week or something and they agreed to nock £20 off for messing me around. so around a year went by and i tried to swap (due to ridiculas high bills) i figured debt would be payed,
i then receive a letter saying due to o/s monies we wont let you change suppliers till debt is paid??
so i call up to be told i had paid £40 of the debt and it had dropped off the meter but they didnt know why.
so i agreed to stay again at 6 per week but i took a note each monday the £6 was taken so again when debt should of been cleared i tried to change and they refused it again for same reason
so i called again and asked why and the op said the debt had fallen off the meter again, i was fuming so i told her i had been watching and i have a not of exact reading plus debt being taken off she went to her manager came back and said oh it was an error on our system so there is no debt, call closed. but then i thought on, if this time was an error what about the last time called and complained but never heard anything back so complained to ombudsman.
anyway i would just leave them im with eon who yes are (supposed to be) dearer but i dont feel like im being robbed and im sure my bills are a little less.

Thanks guys , just had a look and going to switch to co-oprative, look reasonable and would save around £720 a year!

They did it to us too, but it was more than double.

They wanted to up our DD to £240 a month. We were nearly £300 in credit with them at the time

I rang and demanded they put it back down to a more reasonable level, which they did no problem.
