To not want go go into work after my tooth extraction?

I'm having my tooth taken out at dentist today and I'm expected to be in work after, but a few friends have said as much that I'd be daft to go into work afterwards (it's an office, switchboard type o job). Will I be ok going in work later or will my employer be sympathetic if I ring in with toothache?!?!

You'll be all numb with bloody spit dribbling out of your mouth. I think an extraction warrants a day off work, to be honest.

I would see how you get on. I had a tooth out and was absolutely fine, it hardly bled and I wasnt in any discomfort.

I arranged the day off when I had a tooth out, and although it wasn't as bad as I feared I was glad to spend the afternoon on the sofa as the anaesthetic wore off.

DP was really trashed by his though and retired to bed for the rest of the day and couldn't eat properly until day 4. (He is a bit of a big girls blouse though)

Sounds like we're the awful teeth family but these were several years apart!

Don't call in with toothache -- explain that you have blood falling out of your mouth and can barely be understood over the phone.

When I had teeth out I found it really wasn't too painful (don't worry!!) but there is blood and swelling, and I definitely could not have gone into work.

When I had one recently the dentist said to rest for the rest of the day, ie no scrubbing floors etc as you can set the bleeding off again.

If your employer is happy for you to see how you feel in terms of coming in then fine, but if they'd have to arrange cover if you don't feel up to it, the safest thing would be to tell them in advance that you won't be in, or that you'll work up until you have to go to the dentist but won't be back for the rest of the day.

When I had mine, I was told to bite down on cotton and not speak too much for 48 hours to allow a clot to form. That probably wouldn't work in a switchboard environment.

You need to rest, an extraction is quite a big deal. I had my one and only panic attack after I got a tooth out.

I had 2 out and was fine, they packed the holes with something and they didn't bleed, wasnt painful either. I went to work afterwards.
Maybe warn work and see how you feel.

I was told to rest afterwards. It was a good thing I didn't go to work as whilst watching daytime tv I wondered why my left boob was wet....it was covered in blood tinged dribble Shock

See how you feel is good advice. It depends on all sorts of things. A not very strongly rooted front tooth might be out in a few minutes, stop bleeding almost immediately, and leave you feeling a fraud for taking the afternoon off. On the other hand I remember a colleague being signed off for three days after having a couple of wisdom teeth out (and still looking like a hamster when she did come back). ISTR I went back to work after having a molar out, some years ago, and everyone said gosh aren't you brave, but it truly wasn't bothering me that much. Keeps your mind off the discomfort (and gives you brownie points with the management).

Seeing how you feel is best. In my case I didn't have much pain afterwards, and was able to carry on (albeit not eating for a few hours). Each person is different.

My tooth broke mid extraction and they had to 'dig' it out ..it was horrendous and i also broke down into a sobbing mess afterwards from the trauma. (warn work)

I've possibly been lucky in that the extractions I've had have been pretty straightforward and not caused any difficulties in themselves. However the anaesthetic can take absolutely hours to wear off and I wouldn't consider doing anything that involved looking or sounding intelligent the same afternoon.

It's different for everyone. I was fine when I had a tooth extracted and would have been able to work, but my tooth came out easily and quickly. It's not like that for everyone, and you won't really know until you have had it done, so wait and see is the best advice.

I've had a couple of teeth out and don't remember having to take time off work to recover. I would see how you feel, rather than deciding in advance.
