To think the rubix cube is impossible to solve.

I have been trying for weeks since my birthday on 14th December.

It just can't be solved

I used to be able to do it, it was one of my party tricks. There's a set of moves that solves it every single time, provided you always hold it a set way (I used to hold it with the centre blue square facing me).

I've forgotten it now, and my party trick had been reduced to Donald Duck impressions. :(

I used to be able to do it in about a minute when they first came out as I knew the formula. Wouldn't have a clue now though!

Used to be able to do it too. Think I would struggle without a solution now!

Anyone who can solve one and wants a challenge should try solving this. It is a really good party trick .

I can do it, but only having memorised sequences of moves. It takes about 2 minutes, and is easy once you've learned it.

When I was young I could actually solve it but no way could I do that now.

I memorised the moves when I was about 11 (when the Cube came out) and as long as I don't think too hard when I'm solving it, I can still do it. It's like my physical memory still works but the brain one doesn't,

Had to work out the solution to the 4x4 though, then I made the mistake of lending that Cube to a school friend and they broke it. Never got another one. Sniff.

Yet things come full circle. DS is fascinated by the 3x3 and I'm sure one day he'll crack it.

It's just a bunch of algorithms. My DS can do it in about 2 mins, he is age 9. He taught me and I can do it in about 4 mins.

I don't know about reasonable, but it would seem that you don't understand what the word "impossible" means.

I can't personally. the closest i got was 2 layers and the cross on the bottom... however, there were other pupils at school who could solve the damn thing in seconds...

Why not up the ante and try solving them hurtling to earth in a rubber dinghy?

Give it to a small child they can do them.
Also my Dh can do it in about 10 minutes, Ds takes long about 20 and other Ds and me, not in a million years.

2 mins 30 seconds was my best ever time.

Sadly I can't remember how to get the corners in place now which is rather important.

It's really easy though - all about learning how to manipulate a given block into place without disturbing the others.

YABU in saying you think it's impossible to solve, when there are clearly thousands of people who can do it. If I remember back to my childhood, I'm sure the 'record breakers' used to do it in under a minute.
Personally, I've never managed to do it, but then there's loads of things I've never mastered, doesn't mean they are impossible to do.

I hope Mr Rubik made a lot of money from it, and didn't just sell out for a few dollars early on

I can do it,

I can also teach you to do it.

do a face(white) and work down in slices,

then place the corners in the right location,

then turn the corners so they match the middle pieces on each face,

then the middle bits around the bottom slice,

that's the basic fool proof method,

I can talk through any moves.

Using the instructions it has just taken me most of the morning to solve it!!! But it is now done :)
Next challenge will be to do it without instructions but not today.

Solution I used was

White cross with matching the colours below - middle and one above - on each side. Order blue, orange, green, red
Then did white corners
Next middle and top layer of each 4 colour
Then yellow side

My method was:
Top face (I always went with orange :o)
Bottom corners
Middle layer
Bottom layer

I must google how to place the corners...

DH could do it behind his back. He's an engineer. I couldn't do it even following the instructions in the book .

I need to buy a cube now.

I could do two layers, but have forgotten the instructions on how to complete the third layer.

My dad taught me how when I was a kid, there's a set of moves that will do it every time. First the corners, then the edges. It was really easy to do when you knew how, obviously! Can't remember it now though...
