My OH teaches boys ages around 17 to 18.

And he repeats their slang words. Because I think he must think its cool.

He used a word tonight and I said "how uncool is it to use that word"

And I got the response "well it is cool as 17 year old lads are saying it"

Erm ... no it really doesn't.

I have an iphone and he went on and on about what an rubbish phone it is. Suddenly out of no where he gets the iphone 5 because thats the phone most of the lads have in his class.

My husband is in his late 30s.

YANBU - there is nothing sadder than a man of nearly 40 trying to pretend he is 17 and 'one of the lads'. (And as a teacher of teens I can tell you that they will think he is even sadder than you do!). They will not think he is 'cool' believe me.

Cringing for you tbh.

We had a teacher that took chemistry that was like this. His first class ever he cracked some jokes and then picked up some faddy thing that was lying on his desk, did this sort of Elvis laugh and said 'I've got one of these at home...'

We looked at him as if he was some kind of alien; no-one laughed and most looked incredulous that he would even attempt to ingratiate himself in such a way. He had a cauliflower ear and forever after we would joke that he'd been ironing when the phone went (my, we were nice girls).

To all the 17-18 year olds he teaches, he's just another old fart teacher. Look at him with pity. Maybe tell him this.

I feel your pain. My DH is 51 FFS, and he has started doing that really annoying American/Australian upward inflection thing that all the kids do. I think he picked it up at work, and it drives me FUCKING NUTS. If I mention it I get accused of belittling him or picking on him.

There will be some late 30s men and even older who will be 'cool' to teens, but you can absolutely, categorically be certain that they do not achieve their 'coolness' by acting like or emulating 17 year olds.

He needs to cop onto himself quickly before he becomes a laughing stock. When I was 17 I though late 20s was washed up and over the hill, never mind late 30s.
