To not want a dog licking my baby's mouth?

Actually it wasnt licking my baby's mouth it licked in her mouth.

So, i've been on this site for about 5/6 years and i'm going for it. I'm throwing myself into the AIBU pit...go for your lives.

So, i visit my dad/stepmum. They have three dogs. They are their babies. I respect that fully, they are "mummy" and "daddy" to these dogs and (having owned a dog in the past) conpletely get that we're in the dogs home and it's parents rules.

Baby dd2 is 10 months old. I warn, just be careful as she was quite frightened of friends dog on weds. So i hold dd2 on lap and we gradually introduce her to the three lovely, good natured dogs. They start to jump up a lot and so they get put outside. Dd2 is then crawling/cruising about and one dog gets back into the room. She bounds over to dd and starts licking her face and as dd laughs licking inside her mouth.

I swoop dd up and say "no licking faces" put dd in my lap again but dog jumps up again licking all over her mouth and in it. I stand up to get dd2 away and say "dad can you stop her please?" As clearly dog wont listen to my command understandably.

Stepmum took huge offense. Started loudly fussing dog that i'd told her off for playing with the baby etc and clearly not amused with me. She obviously thinks i was being precious.

So was i? They knew we were coming, but i know they have dogs. Should i expect that to go undetered or am i being unreasonable? My dad did tell his dog off but again stepmum told him off for going too far. They will openly kiss the dogs and stepmum will put her tongue out to them but i dont really want my baby's mouth to be licked like that.

Come on then... Hit me with it..

So dog saliva is'nt "a healant" then? You shock me!

Hmm
sleepsforwimps2010 · 23/12/2012 08:50

there was a baby killed last month from a single bite from a small dog....
they clearly have no control over these dogs imo the dogs should stays out of the room or you don't go back!

don't be one of those people who allows there child to be injured because they don't want to offend someone's dog!

Stinkyminkymoo · 23/12/2012 09:06

Disgusting! I'm have a dog and there's no way she would lick me on the mouth let alone my baby! Just urgh!

The rule is if it can lick its own arsehole it's not licking my face which is why I can kiss the horses as much as I like

meddie · 23/12/2012 09:16

eurgh just no. my mother is the same with her 2 precious chihuahua's yippy little rats that try desperately to lick you. I push them away and she says "Just let him give you a kiss then he will calm down", My response was. "why dont I just lick his arse and cut out the middle man".

No way would I let a dog that has been licking its genitals anywhere near a babies face.

Theicingontop · 23/12/2012 09:18

They sound like lovely dogs, but yadnbu.

Tailtwister · 23/12/2012 09:21

Yuck! YANBU. I wonder if you licked your bottom and then tried to lick her face and inside her mouth how she would like it.

I love dogs and had them all through my childhood, but think it's disgusting when people let them lick their faces.

AlmostAChristmasHipster · 23/12/2012 09:25

Your SM is a crazy loon!

I'm bonkers about dogs - I prefer them to people - but there's no way I'd let mine anywhere near a baby! He's far too bouncy and licky!

My ex MIL used to let her dogs lick her teeth. It still makes me bilious thinking about it.

Just no!

OP, you need to insist upon some firm guidelines and ignore the tantrums.

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 23/12/2012 11:24

my sister's dog licks his penis, balls and arse. He licks her cats' arses. He scoffs up vomit and my sister has to race to the cat litter tray before he gets there...

There is not a snowballs chance in hell that any dog is getting his tongue anywhere near my mouth, or the mouths of my children!

acceptableinthe80s · 23/12/2012 12:24

Yanbu, it's gross. Your SM sounds like she hasn't a clue, play with the dogs toys! does she want the dogs to harm your baby?! Can they not visit the baby at your house? would be more sensible, i wouldn't be comfortable having 3 big dogs in the same house as a baby, especially as the dogs are treated like children.

strumpetpumpkin · 23/12/2012 12:31

eurgh. I have a dog, but that is disgusting. I cant bear dogs licking, and definitely not faces. My dog tries, but not on me or the children

fanoftheinvisiblebigredman · 23/12/2012 12:35

As the owner of a very sweet hairy 5 month old puppy who is just trying to be friendly when he tries to lick faces...YADNBU.

Sweet and friendly he may be but I also know that one of his favoured delicacies is snaffled random turd I am doing everything I can now to reinforce that people don't want licking!

EuroShagmore · 23/12/2012 12:37

Bleugh. I grew up with dogs. We trained them not to lick faces. They didn't after training. Dogs lick their balls and anuses and stick their noses in random stuff in the park. Licking faces is horrible!

Seabird72 · 23/12/2012 14:11

A dog's mouth is as full of germs as anyone else's - I don't like dog's licking me at all and I have 3. Out on a walk one of my new dogs licked a baby's face as we were walking past the buggy - I didn't know what to do with myself! I'm surprised the mother didn't shout at me so I walked away very quickly as I would not have thought her unreasonable at all if she had. (I've heard this about dog's mouths having super magical healing powers - well I watch my dogs lick their bums, accidentally step in other dog shit when out on walks and then lick their paws clean, one of my dogs has even wolfed down other dog shit as a snack - almost threw up in the street when I saw her do that! - vets tell you not to let your dog lick their wounds as they ill make them worse so how can they have these magical healing powers??!)

Tinkerisdead · 23/12/2012 14:30

I'm starting to feel worse now! Snaffled up dog turds and the like.

But you all reminded me, the two other dogs - one was licking the others back. Like monkeys grooming each other so i asked what they were doing? She told me littlier dog has eczema or suchlike and so they put a butter type cream on. I said oh right so big dog is licking the butter off?
"Oh no, she's licking all the scabs and dry bits off little dog"

Bleugh. I havent seen the story of the baby killed either so i'll google that Sad

the dogs shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a babies face, whether the dog licks the baby or not.

CatchingMockingbirds · 23/12/2012 14:42

My dog isn't allowed to lick anyone's face, yanbu. Eeewww...

Tinkerisdead · 23/12/2012 14:51

Ok i googled that news story as well as all the illnesses mentioned. I now feel sick as a dog (geddit?)

That's it now, def gonna be making my views known. Especially in regards to the toys situation.

Love dogs, have 2, sleep on end of bed, lick DS on hands etc but not in the mouth and never someone else's child, yuck!

SproutsMakeRudolphPongwiffy · 23/12/2012 16:48

YANBU I have a very affectionate basset who's desperate to lick DD, however he knows not to go near her head and is satisfied when she thrusts a hand towards him! Why, why, why would you let a dog lick your tongue?! I've had dogs all of my life and would never do that.
