Anyone else hear Laura Trott say this...

...last night in Sports Personality of the Year.

She was talking about Sarah Storey & said 'yes, she is nearly as good as us', meaning the Olympic GB team.

wtf, Sarah Storey was a Paralympian nominated for the award, I'm sure she is delighted to hear she is 'nearly as good' as the able bodied team, what with not being a proper athlete like the rest of them ffs! After all the Paralympians are second class surely, & they must emulate the Olympic team & try to be as good as them as competing in the Paralympics simply isn't in the same league.

Crass & made me go Shock

I am sure it was meant as a compliment. I don't think it's very nice to dissect the words of a young girl like this. She is clearly well aware of the training SS does and how brilliant SS is and was complimenting her.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 17/12/2012 08:46

An unfortunate choice of words i assume.

Sirzy · 17/12/2012 08:49

Didn't she just miss out on being selected for the Olympic team? So I would guess that was what she was reffering to, but a bad choice of words I agree.

heyannie · 17/12/2012 08:52

She also said Sarah could destroy her in a time trial. She didn't intend to say anything disparaging to Sarah or any paralympic athlete, she was merely saying that Sarah is practically as strong as an able bodied athlete. The Paralympics exist to enable athletes with disabiliites to compete against others of similar physical capabilities, Laura was simply saying that Sarah's talent and hard work mean that she could probably overcome her disability and be as strong, if not better, than her Olympic counterparts. She sounded in awe and inspired by Sarah, she didn't sound at all patronising to me, so I think it's unfair to have a go at her for a turn of phrase.

badguider · 17/12/2012 08:55

Sarah Storey rides in some able bodied events - she's been in the team for a couple of world championships, so in the world of able-bodied events she is nearly as good as laura, dani and joanna...

I wouldn't normally be a fan of comparing paralympic times/speeds and olympic ones but with Sarah Storey, because she has competed in both it is legitimate i think.

[and Laura did also say that Sarah can destroy her in a time trial]

Pagwatch · 17/12/2012 08:57

I think you are being harsh.
I think she was just emphasising how fantastic an athlete Sarah Storey is. I thought admitting that another athlete destroys her in time trials was ery honest and her whole tone was one of admiration and huge respect.

I tink the fact that the Paralympics are outstanding athletes needs to be emphasised. Having sat with an arse who remained unimpressed at my DD having met Hannah Russel and naming her as her idol and said 'oh . Paralympic golds. I thought you meant the real Olympics.

EuroShagmore · 17/12/2012 10:57

It was a reasonable comment. Sarah Storey is very close to being able to win a place on the "able-bodied" team. Therefore, she is nearly as good as its current members.

UniS · 17/12/2012 11:14

In the dog eat dog world of competitive cycling , yes Sarah S is nearly as good as Laura Trott et al. Proved it at olympic team selection trials and yes would whop LT in a Time trial because LT specializes in a different discipline to SS.
Before the rule change Storey may well have made it onto the GB Olympic team for cycling, but this year only one entry was allowed in each discipline. There were other cyclists "nearly as good" as all those who did make it to the Olympic GB cycling squad.

Ds has a pic of Sarah S on his bedroom wall, alongside those of Cav, Hoy and Lizzie A. His little hero worship wall.

I think you're misquoting her.

snuffaluffagus · 17/12/2012 11:27

I don't think she did say that..

thegreylady · 17/12/2012 11:38

It was 'really' as good not nearly !

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 17/12/2012 12:02

Misquoted and out of context, well done. Untwist your knickers OP.
