Why on earth do so many people spell swap as "swop"???

I have never given this any thought before - but this is from the Oxford online dictionary -

*Spelling help

Swap can also be spelled swop, with an o: both are correct.*

So seems like you can actually swap swap for swop! Smile

delusionsofadequacy · 14/12/2012 16:57

When I was younger my mum always told me it stood for "share with other people" so I always spell it swop rather than swap.

squoosh · 14/12/2012 17:01

Well I won't swap swap for swop.

BartletForTeamGB · 14/12/2012 17:28

Both spellings are acceptable!

(This was a shock to me too.)

plantsitter · 14/12/2012 17:33

Until recently I thought swop was wrong, but used it anyway because I think it's a nicer looking word! Glad it's acceptable.

SantaWearsGreen · 14/12/2012 18:18

I can't believe you can spell it swop.. It looks so wrong.

StinkyWicket · 14/12/2012 18:30

I knew it was ok both ways but I always spell it swap.

(I only knew because I looked it up as Roald Dahl spelled it like that!)

lurkedtoolong · 14/12/2012 18:59

I'm shocked to my very core that swop is actually correct. OP YANBU at all and frankly my faith in the OED has been destroyed.

Startail · 14/12/2012 19:15

because you say swop

MerryChristmasEverybody · 14/12/2012 19:16

startail: Does that mean WASP should be WOSP then?

OP posts:
iamapushymum · 14/12/2012 19:20

Both are correct, smartpants! Wink

iamapushymum · 14/12/2012 19:21

I wonder where 'swap/swop' has been derived from?

PartridgeInASpicyPearTree · 14/12/2012 19:26

Noooooo! It's horrible with an "o". So disappointed.
