We have had this cleaner for about 7 months. Initially came on 2 separate half days to do cleaning on one day ironing on the other. dd and I would be there for one of the ironing day for a bit of the time. About 3 months ago I changed my days at work and we discussed whether she could swap one of the afternoons and come on another day. In the end she suggested doing both ironing/cleaning on the same day. Same number of hours. This seemed fine but meant we would never see her. Didn't particularly bother me at the time but since then we have had odd things happen in the house

Initially all seemed OK. About 1 month and a half ago, I came home earlier and she wasn't in the house. It didn't tie up with the amount of hours she was supposed to do but all the basic cleaning and ironing work was done so I said nothing.

Then a few weeks later returning to the house after she had been in I found 3 of our painted stairs had a scratch as if sth heavy had fallen/been dragged down the stairs. I phoned her to ask she was all right saying I saw the scratches on the stairs and was worried she might have had a fall (I genuinely was as on one of the stairs, it was more like a big dint). She said no she hadn't had a fall, the paint just came off. I then checked the scratches more closely and realised something had been smeared on them, like a white paste or sth. It was very odd and I knew she was lying to me really.

A week or so later I was retrieving some papers from our recycling and realised one of our spoons and a used yogurt pot were in there as well... Hubby had had that yogurt in the morning and left it on the worktop. There was no way we would have just stuck it in the recycling like this. Since this I have kept an eye on the recycling to make sure none our possessions are in there (crazy I know but ...)

Last week we switched on our DVD recorder and realised someone had recorded Lorraine with the day/time of when she is in the house.

Yesterday came home, went to put recycling in our box. In there I found: an empty Xmas card box (not ours), labels (some of them still with addresses on them and so clearly hers), a bag with used bread (def not ours), a second bag with proper recycling stuff mixed with one of our mugs (not broken), one of my white T-shirts (wet and discoloured). No wash had been put on for our household so then I thought "Does the woman bring her own washing?" My t-shirt might have been left in the machine and put with her own darker clothing? All very weird but I feel pretty uncomfortable with someone in my house doing that.

We were thinking of asking her not to come back in the New Year. Am I right in thinking the woman is getting more brazen? I don't want to have a conversation about any of the above with her. She does all the ironing v well. The cleaning is OK but I think she keeps to kitchen/bathroom and doesn't use the time she has left to do ex dusting etc ... AIBU to want to get rid?

did you get and check references when you initially hired her?

scooterland · 14/12/2012 10:06

Yes we did. The other people she works for are in the house when she is around. We were initially, and it was fine then. It is just gradually since we are no longer around that these odd things are happening.

I would get rid.

Yep get rid. Are you paying through an agency? If so tell them and ask for a new cleaner ASAP. If not- make sure you use an agency next time...
