I hate this government. I really do. They think this guy is 'fit to work'. What planet are they on?

Opinions?

It is ridiculous, but as far as I know they are automatically saying most people are fit to work, yet 80% of those who appeal get the benefit back I believe.

I understand that ATOS who do the assessments get a fee for anyone who they get off benefits, however they don't have to pay anything back if their initial decision is overruled. So it's a win-win for them to say people are fit for work!

It angers me, my DM is seriously ill and on DLA, having had to take early retirement on ill health grounds, and it upsets me that she will have to go through the trauma of another assessment when DLA changes over to the new thing (whatever it's called, I forget!), and then probably have to go through it all again as she will have to appeal. She can't manage to do anything for herself really, other than get showered, and even after she does that she has to go and sit down and rest. She is still grieving for the loss of her old life and the person she was only a short time ago, and it's total cruelty to put her through not just one, but two assessments.

I am so disappointed with the government for preying on the weak and vulnerable in their quest to cut the deficit. Xmas Angry

Yet the woman in Closer magazine is able to scrounge £1300 a month on benefits and live a 'luxurious' lifestyle..

YANBU. It's a disgrace. It's not the govt though - someone in local benefits would have made the decision that he is fit to work.

StNickHasHisXmasTeakozyOn · 13/12/2012 09:14

You're wrong having, it is the government. Atos 'Healthcare' are only doing the so called assessments. The DWP apparently make the decisions. What this govt is doing is fucking disgraceful. Oh for a modern day Guy Fawkes.

Meanwhile, there are currently many more job hunters than vacancies, so that people who are genuinely able to work and would love the chance are part of a massive scramble for every job that comes up. What good is shunting people who are very unwell/barely mobile/suffering severe chronic pain onto the job market when there aren't enough bloody jobs anyway?

SantaWearsGreen · 13/12/2012 09:46

The woman in closer wasn't as well off as it made out at all. The biggest part of her income went straight out on rent and council tax.. It didn't leave her with much at all. She said in the interview she saved the money every month to pay for the gifts. I'm not entirely sure why she gave the interview tbh.. It didn't make her look particularly great.

Sad for this man however no surprise that tories are cutting the poorest.. Not really news i'm afraid.

YANBU

And I don't give a shit what anyone says, the woman in Closer is far more able to go to work than this man, she just doesn't want to!

ReindeerBollocks · 13/12/2012 09:52

YANBU. The whole reassessment process is very wrong and incompetent.

Surely they should have doctors involved in this process somewhere and from what I've read ATOS aren't doctors. Scary.
