To think I'm putting too much money on the meters??

Hi,

I have recently had gas and electric prepayment meters installed in my home, this is due to EON underestimating our utility bills for a year. (but that's another story

Anyway, I am having to put £10 on each meter every 18-24 hours so I am spending at least £60 a week on each meter.

The engineer who installed the meters seemed to think we would need to be putting £15 a week on each meter.

So the question is, is this normal?

I don't have a meter but that sounds absurdly expensive! I would definitely get the meters checked out.

We have meters and £15 each o week is enough. But do put a little more in gas to be able to have heating on more in winter

This is really expensive, but one thing I wondered is whether you are paying the debt off on your new meters as well? eg if you are putting £10 on and £5 of that is going on paying off your old debt and the rest for new use?

How much of each £10 is paying off the overcharge?

My friend was putting £10 on, but each time £5 was coming off straight away to pay off what they owed.

Phone them up and find out how much you're paying off in arrears each week as well, maybe they've set it too high?

first off have you got a timer for your water. dont have it on continuous, as it will gain your meter. I have mine to warm up twice. first thing in the morning and about 340. never really run out of hot water.

secondly how long are you having your heating on.? if its on for hours it will cain it. have it on a timer . or better yet have it off and put it on only when you need it.
how much isnyour debt your payin off and what day does it go off. ?

my ele 15 last just over a week with 3 debt.

my gas a tenner can last 7- 8 days with no heating butbobviiusely with the weather a tenner normally last 4- 5 days with heating put on when needed even with another 3 debt every week.

I think its too much

which meter , the lecky or the gas?
I have a lecky meter and am paying off a debt on it and it costs about £5 per 24 hours with hot water and rads on, less if they are off.
I would phone the company and ask how much they are taking off for the debt and negotiate this down.

also they should only charge you once a week for debit.. no matter how much you out on. my day is a wednesday. I would deffintly check with them.

For gas I used to put on £40-45 per month when I had a card thingy, and about £10 on the electric, so yours sounds excessively expensive for the electric. It sounds like you may be paying arrears off, like the posters above said, but please check these figures with EON.

I live in a 3 bedroomed semi detached house.

Both the meters are costing me £10 every 18-24 hours.

We are paying off a £1500 debt... yes you read that right, according to EON we are spending £3000 a year on gas and electric!

I was paying £75 a month for both at my last property and they kept the DD the same, then a year and a half after we moved they slapped us with a £1500 electric bill (arrears) and £750 gas bill (arrears) even though I had been paying them £75 DD?

I'm not silly, we can't possibly be spending £3000 a year on gas and electric??

Our Gas meter takes £8 a week in arrears (even though that is the lower bill) and our electric takes £3 a week in arrears.

I have honestly tried talking to Eon but they are not interested.

I'm desperate. :-(

We also paid them £500 straight away when we got the bill for electric... these people are bleeding us dry!

Who can I turn to for practical help?

this is why you NEVER EVER go with EON they told us we owed them £2000 we had just had dd2 no real money to spare etc etc etc we got someone independent to check it out turned out they owed us £200!! took us 6months of hassel to get it back!!

So since you moved house, your monthly spend on gas and electric has increased from 75 per month to, what, 250 a month? Sounds somewhat unlikely. Did they test the meters? Did you check the readings when you first moved in? Have you tried reading the meters before you go out, with everything turned off, and again when you come back in?

This sounds crazy. I'm living in a 2-bed rental property with prepayment by card/key. Gas is currently about £2 per day and electricity less than £1. But I'm out all day and set the thermostat to 14 degrees at night. I'm doing about 3 or 4 loads of washing per week, not using the tumble drier much and watching very little tv. TVs/computers use a fair bit of power.

Omg that is loads. I used to have meters, and will be having them again next week, thank's to an Npower cock up. I used to put £15 a week on each, and that was for a 4 bed semi.

We read the meters at the moment when we use every single appliance.

We have worked out that in 12 hours we have spent £3.50.

I'm with eon and we put £30 on Gas and £20 on electric every 10 days. This keeps a 3 bed semi at a constant 20 degrees day and night and the tumble drier is on every day. We are not paying off any debt.

£60 a week per meter is insane!
