Evening wear mean? full length dress or cocktail dress?

Im probably not posting in the right place so for that I am BU, sorry.

Evening wear tends to mean full length, however nowadays a cocktail dress is often acceptable. It depends on the event really? How posh? If its the forces, then long length gown definitely.
