Why, oh why, do we, as mums, feel it's okay to judge each other based on what we spend at Christmas?

Really, I honestly don't care if you spend £5 or £5,000 on your children so why is MN full of threads going "really" and "how ridiculous" about what other people spend.

Surely the whole point is to enjoy Christmas, rather than let it become yet another excuse to look down on others for what they do (or don't do)!

I just don't get it.......

Surely this is the same as any other topic? Because people ask for perspectives, and others offer opinions.

YANBU - I totally agree and for that reason I have not even opened any threads on this topic as I really really think it's up to individuals how much they want to spend/ not spend and I don't want to know!

Schmoozer · 07/12/2012 19:47

Yanbu
I also have avoided opening threads about how much do u spend ..
Just so much potential for vulgarity, irrelevance and pretentiousness yeuk !!

bradyismyfavouritewiseman · 07/12/2012 19:50

Yanbu. I refuse to take part in 'we are better than you because we spend 'x' amount'.

Both sides can be vile and smug.

Its not something i would share with anyone except dh.

I think how much you spend depends on how much you have. We spend about £100 on Christmas presents for step daughter, because that's what we can afford. Birthdays sometimes the same but last birthday it was a little more as I had a bit of a windfall just before so she got something extra. If we earned twice as much I would spend more, if we earned half as much I would spend less. I would never spend money we didn't have and go into debt for it.

SantaWearsGreen · 07/12/2012 20:09

Yanbu.

It seems to be a competition as to who can spend the least which is, um, different. And anyone who spends more than £100 seems to be vilified. Its really odd how catty people get towards how much another family spends.. I'm not really that bothered. Just don't get yourself into debt for the sake of one day, that's all.

Threads about the cost of weddings go the same way too
