This is daft but reay annoying me

The local Co-op is selling cacti with santa hats on very cute and festive but they have them sitting on a low shelf next to the cash desk where kids can get them, so far DN got a prick to the finger as well as lots of other kids a 2yr old grabbed one (they are hand sized) and his mum had to pull out al the jaggy bit from his little hand while he screamed with fright and the pain. They are also in reaching distance of babies in buggys but since they are on the second shelf most adults didn't notice them.

So i asked if they could be moved to a higher shelf and she said no they go on the second shelf! AIBU to think thats just stupid ok it's not going to kill the kids but it's sore. She said people should be supervising their children which they shoud but why not just bloody move them to the higher shelf and take the temptation out of reach the santa hats are like a big red button for kids they can't seem to help themselves (the shop is next to the primary school so lots of kids in).

I don't think you are being unreasonable.

Yes, we all try to keep our kids under control, yes, mine is pretty good about not touching things when I say no - but even he (2.5) would have trouble resisting a little round thing with a santa hat on.

It's just mean. Sweet/whatever is a pain to stop them touching, but at least they don't easily cause pain for the kid if they do! It's like putting knives, or hot things down low, completely thoughtless.

Quite often product placement is paid for. Things that will appeal to children will be at child height, pester power works.
Having said that, it is a stupid place for a cactus. But she May be right that she is not allowed to move it.

They ARE 'targeting' children. Why would an adult buy something in a Santa hat if not for a child to look at?

I doubt that the cactus growers are bothering to pay for product placement....

And lots of people would buy cactuses in santa hats - teens/young adults would think they're cute (if I didn't kill plants I'd think they were cute, and I'm 30-odd). Cacti are inappropriate for 2 year olds though, so putting them up a shelf wouldn't be a problem.

If its the Co-Op I would ask to speak to the manager, and complain to them. (Actually if they did no good I would then whinge to my niece who works in their head office...but not everyone has contacts.)

Find out the contact details of the manager, send a letter/phone/e-mail. Share the details and what to write with all the other parents of young children at school, and with the school. If they get a few, something might happen.......

I do kind of think that since shops are so ready to take advantage of a child's likelihood to grab a low-slung sweety or toy, the fair quid pro quo is that they don't put prickly stuff down there.

Yes, you have to supervise children in shops if you want to shop there with childrem, but the end of her line of argument is that she's entitled to arrange the whole place as an assault course of toddler danger and responsible parents simply shop elsewhere.

I did actuay buy one :) DN I wanted one even after being pricked. The santa hats come off and cacti are the ony things i can keep alive i'm surprised the kids have made it this far
