to be bothered by 'I'm gonna kill you comment'?

During a visit to my best friends house the other day her 3yo DC said this (or similar)to my 3yo DC. Apparently it is a line from Kung Fu panda film? Both my DH and hers overheard this but nothing was said to the child. Now I'm not suggesting he means it or even that he is being overly threatening but I'm just not happy about my DC being spoken to like this and feel something should have been said at the time. What do you think and what, if anything, would you say if it happens again?

Children repeat things. Doesn't mean they mean them. If it was me I might have ventured a mild 'that's not very kind' but honestly, it's not a biggie. Unless you thought he was going to actually kill him?

Personally I would ignore because the less attention made to those sort of comments the better.

A 3 year old has no clue what that means! Of course you shouldn't say anything.

It is a bit precious to be worried about that - (it is jarring when you start hearing that sort of thing from your children) - unless the child in question is holding a knife or gun while saying it of course. Dc do copy what they hear in films and on TV, mine are always 'killing' each other (usually with light sabres) it is all part of imaginative role playing games and will not be meant seriously.

If pets start disappearing from the area then maybe there will be cause for concern though.

I don't believe she meant it however i do believe she should be taught that this is not the way to speak to others.

Perhaps my frustration at other incidents with this child are colouring my judgement!

So pipe up with a "That's not a very nice thing to say" comment and leave it at that.

If anyone made an issue of a comment like that from a 3 year old, I would think their picnic was missing a few sandwiches.

I have a friend who has taken a dislike to my younger chuld saying Jesus Christ, he is 3 and has speech delay, I dosent bother me as its a phrase, and he will soon grow out of it, my oldest also says crap at times, again that doesn't bother me.

Now her child scarring and scratching my sons face and her older son biting my older child and drawing blood, is apparently also just a phrase, two years down the line I'm still waiting for the phrase to be outgrown!!!

DS used to say this all the time, it was awful. Drawing attention to it made it much worse, so I just ignored it and it stopped after a couple of months.

I guess i never realised how much friendships can be tested by the arrival of little ones! Rise above it and keep my sticky beak out it is then.

It's also a line from the lion king which is where my 3 year old first picked it up. Like you, I was a bit upset when I first heard him use that phrase and said it wasn't a nice thing to say. Now he is 4 and has seen all sorts of cartoons which use that phrase and I don't really mind as he says it in role playing games. If he just goes up to another child and randomly says it in a not nice way I tell him off but if it's part of a game I think it's ok and inevitable.

Yep! The things they come out with! My DS has just started reception, in his school though, kids go right up to 11, so he comes home with all sorts, the other day was.... I feel like my heart is breaking??!! Then....... I feel like I want to kill myself!!!????
