Would this gift be ok?

My DS is going to his "Girlfriend's" 4th birthday party. We haven't got much money at the moment, especially with DS's birthday and Christmas coming up, so I took DS in to a charity shop in town that had a selection of new toys and bits for very cheep prices and let him chose what to get her.

He chose two fairy aeroplanes (like those polystyrene aeroplanes but fairies), a mini fairy jigsaw and a small book of Disney princess stickers! The total came to just over £1.50 which tbh was about right for our budget (couldn't really afford much more than £3-5). He also wants to put in a Hama bead coaster he has made.

I was pleased with the purchase at the time, but The more I think about the present the more I think it's really just 'party bag tat'!

Would this present be ok to give or should we stop off at the toy shop this morning and get something else?

My DS had a big birthday party and invited both classes in his year. I certainly did not look at the cost of things. A couple of his nicer presents, that HE really likes, he has spotted at poundland since. It sounds fine to me.

I would say that is alot of fairy/princess stuff, but I don't think it's not enough.

I think she'll love it and it's v sweet.

My almost 4 yr old girl would love that and I would think it was sweet. It's not for other parents to buy my kid their 'big' presents, it's a token gesture I think.

It's lovely, no need to give it another thought. Great that he picked it himself and I bet he's as pleased as she will be.

My girls would have loved them at 4 (and still would at 9 & 10 if the truth be told!). It shouldn't be about the amount of money spent. You've bought some lovely things for a bargain price and the little girl will be thrilled.

I agree with everyone else. The little girl will like it a lot. It is so sweet that he choose those out himself.

Thanks guys! You've put my mind at rest and we've just wrapped them up. DS has also hand made her a birthday card - because it's his girlfriend I let him use some 'posh' things from my own card making stash so it's flower fairies and butterflies - he's pleased as punch and wants to go and give them to her now!! :smile:

The gifts seem lovely and so personal. Specially the handmade birthday card. I would have loved if my daughter got something like this!

That sounds fine. Whenever ds had a party at that age I always felt he got too much stuff, way too much.

I must admit if I feel what I've bought for presents doesn't look much I stick in a bag of 75p haribos, or whatever is on special offer.

I'm a bit about the whole "girlfriend" thing though. Really? Do 3 year olds talk about having girlfriends and boyfriends? My dd didn't.

fakebook of course they're not actually boyfriend and girlfriend they're just amazingly good friends who give each other little kisses and cuddles all the time - he has about 6 'girlfriends' but this girl is his favourite.

I can't upload the photos from my phone but will put them on the computer tonight and then hopefully do it from there.

I think you have captured the essence of what a child's birthday party is about. Your ds has put time and thought into the gift (excellent learning there, consideration, respect, giving) and the birthday girl receives an appropriate gift.

Even better, your budget stays intact so brownie points for being sensible and not caving into consumerist pressure.

I think it sounds lovely too. The only reason why I even note who gives what at parties is so we can send thank you cards. I'm sure the party girl will absolutely love her gifts, so thoughtfully picked out by your DS.
