This PPI refund stuff is bullshit right?

Literally get text messages daily telling me I am owed money back. I ignore them. This then has escalated recently to my phone ringing I answer and there is a recorded message saying I am owed a repayment and to press 1 to speak to someone.

Today I answered my phone to a number I thought I recognised and it was an actual person who launched into a massive spiel saying I had come up on their computer etc, I said I didn't know how this was possible because as far as I was aware I had never paid any PPI and only financing I had had was a mortgage. She started saying the computer said I was due a repayment and all she needed to do was get a financial advisor out to me which was free to sign me up and they would then take it from there as I was definitely due some money back.

I politely declined....but is any of this for real? AIBU to this it is a load of crap and they just sign as many people up as possible in the hope that some of them will be entitled to something and they then get their cut.

Yes. It's crap. They have no way of knowing.

Or at least they shouldn't.

I'd be asking how they know this, have they accessed my information and have they heard of data protection law.

YankTeeDoodleDanTee · 28/11/2012 16:30

It's not crap to get your PPI back, I got nearly £5,000.

It is crap to have someone else do it for you. It's a simple form anyone can fill out.

5dcsinneedofacleaner · 28/11/2012 16:31

It is because its free to do through your bank IF you have paid it at some point. I have no idea why people use these companies!

Boggler · 28/11/2012 16:32

It's crap - I too get daily emails, texts and phone calls and I know that I have never ever gad a loan with ppi. I just ignore the messages but if I ever get a live person (not often) I ask them questions such about the mystical ppi I'm supposed to be owed and guess what they can never answer my questions. That's because it's all bt. I bet if the advisor came to see you they would try and sign you up for something you don't want or need. Just ignore them all.

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/11/2012 16:32

Yank I didn't mean it was crap to get money back you are owed.

What I meant was these companies phoning you telling you they know you are owed money is crap isn't it...I have no recollection of ever paying this so how on earth do they think they know?

OP posts:
YankTeeDoodleDanTee · 28/11/2012 16:33

Oh yeah, that part's crap. They try to tell me the same thing except I have already gotten mine back, thanks!

Viperidae · 28/11/2012 16:34

I'm the same, I get texts, recorded messages and calls but I don't think I've ever had anything I could possibly have paid it on.

Dogsmom · 28/11/2012 16:35

My husband claimed back nearly £7000 of PPI but did it himself, he knew who he'd had loans with and it took less than 5 minutes on the phone, he still gets texts and calls though from companies saying he's owed money.

If you know who you have had finance from then call them yourself and just ask, they'll soon tell you if there were PPI payments on them.

HecatePropylaea · 28/11/2012 16:36

I get the texts.

I would LOVE to get the phone call. I would have such fun.

how did you come by this information? Are you telling me that my bank has disclosed my personal financial information to you? When did they do this? Are you aware of data protection? Who authorised this disclosure...

Ghostsgowoooh · 28/11/2012 16:39

Well my mum got thirteen grand back from poi and I got 1500 back too. But we went through the bank and not these dodgy ppi claim companies. It's worth doing I think

EasyFromNowOn · 28/11/2012 16:41

whoneedssleep - you may not recall paying it, but if you have had any personal loans in the last 15 years or so, it might be worth your while checking if there were PPI premiums included in the loan repayments. Part of the reason for the reclaiming is that PPI was bundled in without people being advised, in some cases, so if you still have your paperwork it won't hurt you to check.

HoratiaWinwood · 28/11/2012 16:42

I saw a thing on Watchdog where a company got around £800 back for a little old lady. She was overjoyed - until they handed her their bill for three times that Angry

The texts, calls, emails, etc are bunk targeting the vulnerable and that is why they actually make me angry.

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/11/2012 16:43

That is the thing Easy, I have never had a loan in my life, I have had a mortgage for the last 9 years and have had credit cards but I always just paid the balance off in full on these and don't ever recall paying any insurance on them.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 28/11/2012 16:44

I get these texts and calls all the time. Most of the time I've got something crazy like £45,000 waiting to be claimed. I haven't had that much debt in my life, let alone paid PPI of that much.

I have sent a claim off on an old Capital One card that I was sold PPI for, because I'm fairly sure that it wasn't applicable and they really pressurised me into agreeing, but I'm not too hopeful.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 28/11/2012 16:48

You may be owed it but these companies are bollocks.

I used to rent my dbro house. He now lives in it. A few days ago he had a call asking for my dd and told him she could claim back 'thousands of pounds worth of ppi payments'. Dbro assured him that was not correct. He also told them 'she doesn't live here anymore and she is only 8'.

they talk shit.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 28/11/2012 16:51

Agree about the companies. I got back nearly £6,000 this year, and did it by myself (some great info on how to on Martin Lewis's MSE site, if you think you ned to claim), it was pretty easy.
Some of these companies want 30% of your compensation. BEFORE VAT!!!
Thieving bastards!

RichardSimmonsTankTop · 28/11/2012 17:15

You could try taking a leaf out of Richard Herman's book...

ImperialStateKnickers · 28/11/2012 17:21

I used to get texts saying I was owed £3750 after my recent accident. The only accident I've ever had was falling off my own pony on our own land when I was 8.

They've fizzled out now, instead I get texts saying I'm owed £3750 for missold PPI.

We've never had a mortgage, I've never needed to take out a loan, and I remember distinctly refusing PPI when I took out my credit card.

I'm intrigued as to why these shysters are so fixated on the sum of £3750 though Grin

StrawWars · 28/11/2012 17:30

Forward the texts to 7762 (s-p-a-m in text) to report them. For Vodafone, it is 87726.

DudeInaTutu · 28/11/2012 17:32

can i ask - i presume if you have ever taken out a loan you would know if you have opted for the PPI with it - yes?

i have always opted out of paying PPI....means ive never paid it - right?

MoomieAndFreddie · 28/11/2012 17:35

my mum had about £5k back

but i do think its dodgy when you get random texts etc. i do, yet i have never ever had PPI - i worked in banking so i knew how useless it was so if i ever had a load or credit card i would make sure it was never included.

so i do think they randomly target people just hoping they have had it

YouOldSlag · 28/11/2012 18:31

reclaiming your own PPI back is easy and I am 3.7k richer because of it. i just wrote letters and got a cheque about 2 or 3 months later.

However, these cold calling companies have jumped on the band wagon. There's no way they can access that kind of protected information, so YANBU, that side of it is bullshit.

nokidshere · 28/11/2012 18:40

I have them too. Normally I ignore them but they are getting clever and used a local number last week.

He said: Hello Nokids I have a refund ready for you for your PPI claim
Me: Oh thats good, how much is it for?
him: pardon me?
me: well you said you had cash waiting for me so how much is it?
him: I don't know
Me: well you just called me and said you had money for me so why dont you know?

etc etc etc for about 20 mins till he got fed up and put the phone down on me lol

gordyslovesheep · 28/11/2012 18:43

worth doing if you have been missold PPI

I was - I claimed back £6k

I did it all myself - took 12 weeks start to finish - worth it

but ignore the calls and the texts - they are fishing

grimbletart · 28/11/2012 19:05

My last text message was very specific - they had £2,038 for me.

I have no loans, paid off my mortgage 15 years ago and have never had PPI in my life.

I texted back - thanks, a cheque will be fine.

I shall have some serious fun when the phone calls start Grin
