To use mince that is 2 days past its use by date?

TENDTOprocrastinate · 26/11/2012 14:53

I've just realised my beef mince is 2 days past its use by/sell by date. I've not got anything else for today's dinner. I was going to cook chilli tonight. I don't really want to waste it either- money is a bit tight at the moment. I wanted to ask others out there if they adhere strictly to the use by dates? I would use it if it was just one day- 2 days I'm not so sure.

I would use it without hesitation.

whoneedssleepanyway · 26/11/2012 14:55

If it smells ok use it, I generally ignore usebuy dates and go by look and smell.

Frontpaw · 26/11/2012 14:55

Has it been left open? If it looks a bit green/slimy or is a bit whiffy, I'd give it a miss, otherwise, if its well cooked, why not? St be tempted to freeze it or reheat any leftovers though!

Pandemoniaa · 26/11/2012 14:56

I'm a bit precious about meat and use by dates but I'd still open the mince first before chucking it out. If it smells OK it probably is OK.

Whathashappenedtomyboobs · 26/11/2012 14:56

It will be fine, I would cook it.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/11/2012 14:57

If it doesn't smell and is visibly fine, then yes.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 26/11/2012 14:58

No it's not open. I'll give it a sniff when I come to cook it (I don't want to open it in advance as this'll give it more going off time!)

I usually make enough for dh to have tomorrow for lunch- would that not be sensible?

just trust your eyes and nose, our grandmothers never had fridges or use-by dates....

Frontpaw · 26/11/2012 15:05

If it looks and smells ok, then fine, but if its a borderline, then I'd be wary (unless you are microwaving it as that nukes any bugs).

Mrsjay · 26/11/2012 15:07

if it smells ok and isnt that grey colour then use it , i once defrosted mince and it was off the smell is something else you will know

whoneedssleepanyway · 26/11/2012 15:09

if it is fine today when you cook it then it will be fine tomorrow for lunch too, once you have cooked it I would say it would be fine for at least another 2/3 days it makes no difference if you cooked it 3 days before use buy date or on use buy date to how long it would be good for once cooked.

cozietoesie · 26/11/2012 15:10

I'm not hidebound by sell by dates but on mince, I'm careful because the mincing process has exposed the meat to air already. Too often you open it up and the clump of mince looks red on the outside but is thoroughly green on the inside.

If it looks and smells broadly OK when you open the clump then I'd go for it with lots of spices - and if you cook it long enough then it should be alright for tomorrow.

I'd have a Plan B around though. Just in case you break it open and it's manky!

TENDTOprocrastinate · 26/11/2012 16:50

Thanks for the replies. The mince is simmering away now. It looked/smelled fine. I'm going to simmer it for over an hour
So hopefully I'll still be alive tomorrow!

Boil the hell out of it. It will be fine. I don't even look at BBDs I just trust the nose.

Startail · 26/11/2012 17:04

It will be fine, dodgy mince smells evil when you cook it.

Any way I have known mince to be brown and nasty before its sell by date.

Tesco got huffy when I took it back.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2012 17:08

Eyes and nose as said up thread - I would and not even think about it!

WhenShallWeThreeKingsMeetAgain · 26/11/2012 17:09

I NEVER look at Use-by-Dates. Just use your nose and some common sense!

IloveJudgeJudy · 26/11/2012 17:21

I did the same last night. Used half in chili and using rest in spagbol tonight. We're all fine.

Softlysoftly · 26/11/2012 17:29

You cannot smell or see food poisoning bugs, I always adhere to use by after my food safety training. (not best before/sell by which is bollocks).

Food poisoning can kill, its not just a dicky tummy, a friend of my dads got poisoned, her system was so severely damaged she died a year later in her early 30s.

I also hate "never did me grandma no 'arm", what's the reduction in mortality rate since then?......

Softlysoftly · 26/11/2012 17:30

That sounded an incy bit preachy Blush.

ll31 · 26/11/2012 17:32

or good advice... even tho i 'm a smell it and see person

x2boys · 26/11/2012 17:36

does it still look pink and smelll ok if so yes but if its gone a grey colour no

lovelyladuree · 26/11/2012 20:27

Let us know how many times you all vomit in the night. You might break a MN record.

RibenaFiend · 26/11/2012 20:34

Ooh! Is there a vomiting record lovely?!! I had the Norovirus a few weeks back. I wonder if I came close Grin

Sarrz · 26/11/2020 19:03

It’s funny you say this, I literally am in the same predicament, my mince expired yesterday, but i am currently frying the living daylights out of it as I needed it for dinner today was also didn’t want to waste. It seems to be okay so far, it did have a little off smell to it when I opened it but that’s fine now
