Apples and Oranges for Halloween?

when I was growing up you got monkey nuts, apples and tangerines off your neighbours for Halloween and only a little in the way of sweets if you were very lucky. Do you think if I popped an apple or tangerine in their bag with a handful of sweets they'd chuck the apple right back at me?

Put it this way - the year we ran out of sweets and were reduced to raiding the cupboards for raisins, fruit etc, we got our pumpkin kicked over and smashed before we got a chance to take it in.

I gave cabbage, onion, and the contents of our fridge once... it was our last night on holiday. The kids weren't happy at first (though they did get a whole cake when I remembered I had it) but the parents were very pleased with their bottle of wine.

It's ALWAYS been about the sweets for me, I was an 80's child when sweets were closer to drugs than sugar...

Most likely :). We used to actually recite "any apples or nuts" and then played with the apples in water trying to pick them out with you mouth and hands held or tied behind your back! I'm sitting here with my 5 yr old who is dressed in witches outfit waiting till its dark to go out and dreading her getting too many sweets

I had a friend who worked for a wax modelling place, she used to make wax "severed fingers" and eyeballs to drop in the baskets. In fairness it was in Canada where these things were appreciated (so she assures me )

Maybe if you turned them into toffee apples....?

One year I spent ages putting pumpkin faces onto oranges as a healthy alternative to crappy sweets.

Never again.

My driveway was covered in orange mush the next morning.

I used to give children oranges when I was a child myself (not that long ago - mid to late 90's). My Mum didn't believe in buying expensive sweets to give to random dressed up children at the door! Once I gave a child a mouldy orange...I bet he got a suprise when he got home!

We have DD's small witches cauldron ready filled with humbugs and Cadbury's heros. Hope someone comes now! We only had 2 trick or treaters last year.

Why would they throw them at you?

Lots of kids love fruit and are very grateful when you bother to give them anything.

Sweets are cheaper though.

My mum once gave trick-or-treaters fruit - she wasn't expecting any and had no sweets in. They looked confused, apparently, and then nobody else knocked.
