Is this odd? I don't think so....

.... my DD (3) has a book bag. It is, like 90% of the bookbags I've seen, decorated to make it personal to her.

I have added a poppy to it, for November.

A friend has told me that this is 'odd'.. It's not, is it? I've explained to DD, in age appropriate language, why we've added the poppy and what it represents.

Is it really bad to expect my DD to wear her poppy with pride? SUrely the poppy is as relevant today - for her generation - than it was for ours?

Feeling a bit 'eek' about having stuck it (right in the centre!) of her book bag now!

Its not odd my children wear poppies and both the older two 5 and 8 learned about it in school last year (reception and year 2)

Ds is nearly 3 and on rememberance Sunday will be coming to watch me parade and i will be explaining a bit about it to him.

I think its a lovely idea to put one onher book bag.

Remember not to pin one on your dc in year 1 if they are at all like mine was when he pricked his classmate with the pin Blush

We have poppies at school and talk about why we wear them. I think it is lovely that you have put one on her book bag and discussed the meaning; ignore your friend

My DDs aged 3 and 4 took the poppys door to door round the village with their grandpa this year. They were bursting with pride, so was he.

i think it's a lovely thing to do. good tribute, and yes, it is as relevant now as it was when it first appeared.

You're not being odd at all... my boys have stickers on their coats (they would be dangerous with a pin) and they know why they're wearing them.

YANBU.

(I never thought to personalise their book bags, though I did stick an age related number on theirs on their birthday, they are still there so I may add some more!)

Not odd to add a poppy because it's November. Definitely odd to add something different for every month. Please tell me it is the former...

My 3 yr old twins had a lovley chat with an old solider when they went to get their poppies about how buying a poppy is saying a big thankyou for all the brave men and lady soliders who keep them safe. Its never to early to teach them (and if my sister has her way they will be marching in the rememberance parade as cadets in a few years ;)

ds and dd will buy theirs tomorrow. Ds had worn one at school since he started, he's now in Yr5.

You're friend is odd, they sell poppies in my DDs school from the nursery up.

My DDs name is Poppy, and this is her 2nd November, both Novembers she has had a poppy on her pushchair, and we stop and chat to the lovely old guys who man the stalls, they always seem delighted that she is called Poppy :) yesterday we stopped for a chat and the chap asked me what her name was and when I said what it was he laughed and gave us one of the bigger ones (the ones up from the card ones). So I put £2 in his pot.

I think it's very important that we continue to remember those who fought for us all those years ago.

YADNBU DD has worn a poppy every year since she was born (stickers at first - proper poppy in a buttonhole from 3)

She knows why, my Dad was army and his dad fought in WW2 at dunkirk. She knows its our way of remembering people who have fought for our freedom, and for those who have given their life to do it. She knows how lucky we are that her grampy and my grandad (she never knew him) survived their stints

This year DS is 2.10 and we will start explaining to him too - I love the idea of the sticker on the bookbag , I know last year DD was telling everyone in her class that grampy was in the army and she is very proud of him Grin

Last year, when SmallBoy had just turned two, I put a poppy on his stroller. This year he's just turned three and it's going on his coat. I keep one on my coat and one on the nappy bag (which is a backpack).
