To think that 60k is a lot of money to earn a year?!

I think it is a lot of money to earn per year but it seems a lot of people on mumsnet don't think so, am I in the piss poor minority here or what?!

It sounds like a lot of money when you're poor like me!

However...I would imagine that if you earn £60k a year, you probably have bills to pay that match that? (if that makes sense)....so you might not necessarily have loads of spare cash!

I'm pretty sure if I was earning £60k I wouldn't feel rich and would want more!!! (plus the tax man takes loads!)

Infact the majority of posters would say it's a lot of money. So YANBU to think so but YABU to say a lot of posters disagree with you.

Yes it is a very good salary and way above national average.

However people live to their means, so often are just used to the amount they bring home. Their lifestyle is based on the income they have - whatever that amount is. Their mortgage, childcare, bills, everyday outgoings, pension payments, etc are all based on current income. To have to go down from that is hard. Always been way harder to go down in income than to go up.

I don't think it's a lot if you have 3 children and a mortgage on an average 4 bed house.

I think it's a lot if you've paid off your mortgage and you don't have children/ they have left home.

DH and I are in our early 30's with 3 DC and I would say 30k would be a pretty good salary, although I think the national average is around 25k, if not less?

It is a lot but at the same time it's certainly not a huge sum for an experienced professional to earn. I'm sure there are head teachers, doctors, plumbers who all earn at least that much so if all your family and friends are in that earning bracket you may not think it's unusual.

It's in the top 4% of the country.

That doesn't mean it's a lot if by a lot you mean you can buy loads of stuff. At 3 times that salary for £180k you cant buy a studio in London or a 3 bed in a decent area where I live in Hertfordshire - you can buy a 550 square foot 2 bed tiny flat. Maybe.

I could earn £60k but I've stepped out to earn a lot less than that while DCs are small. My costs (clothes,appearance upkeep, fuel, toll costs, tax ect) are a lot less.

However yes it is a substantial amount to live on. It's not rich but it is comfortable.

What's the take home on 60k anyway? Dh has a good wage (30k) but take home is shit because of how much he has to pay towards his (decreasing) pension.

We earn that (ish), and we sure as shit aren't rich.

We live in a nice, 3 bed home. We have nice decor, new decking, two nice cars.

But we have no cash spare, ever, as we have outgoings to match our incomings.

If we lived in a 2 bed flat and ran one old car then yes, we would have spare funds, but thats not reality ifswim?

If you live in London, £60k is just about enough for you to rent a scabby 1 bed flat in a scruffy but mostly safe area. I don't call that rich.

Hmm. We struggle on £1500 take home, so it's more than double that. Yes, would make my CURRENT situation very pleasant. However, if I had a large detached house, big mortgage to pay, nursery bills, car loan, etc etc, I can see how it would quickly disappear.

So I guess my verdict is.....you live to your means. It's a good salary - but I don't think you'd be 'rich' by any stretch. Rich in my mind is when you don't have to worry about bills at all - don't have to look at price tags - and can basically do exactly what you want, when you want.

And you'd need more than £3500 a month to do that!
