to not want dd (7) to be singing ...

A song with the words 'sexy underpants' in during school choir lessons. Especially when she teaches dd2 (5) and I have to explain what sexy means while getting them out of the house to school. Yeah yeah I know they learn loads in the playground, but to actually be teaching these as words to a song. (collaborated by another child in her class).

Oh do you mean Drop n Harmony 'Sexy Underwear'?

If so, I don't think the lyrics are suitable at all and the underwear is the least unsuitable part for 7yr olds really.

I would not be happy with that either. 'Sexy' is a tricky word to explain to your dd without entering a minefield of questions you may not want to get into now. my dd sings a playground chant with it in and I have told her not to say it as it is not a word for little girls.

Haven't got all the details as dd2 was only taught the 'a little bit cheeky' words, and haven't had a chance to pin dd1 down as had a friend here, also don't want to draw more attention to it. What will preschool say if ds (3) starts talking about it.

My dd has been watching some 1980's videos where they have a speech at the beginning about ratings where they say "15 videos may contain sexy scenes" and for ages my dd has been asking what "sexy scenes" are and why can't she see them. I wish they'd never mentioned it.

If it is the song I'm thinking of, I'm sorry but I don't believe any school would teach that to 7yr old children.

According to other girl in dd's class it had spiderman in it, so don't know it can be anything too harmful but as popsypie says, not easy to explain to a 5yr old, I just said 'not a nice way to say pretty', was put on the spot a bit.

Sorry don't mean to drip feed but I didn't know about the spiderman bit when dd2 cornered me, she just asked what 'sexy underpants' were as we were walking out of the door to the walking bus. Asked dd2 about it after school before collecting dd1 and she told me that dd1 had just taught her the 'cheeky bit', I'm guessing that is what the teacher called it.

Just realised will have to talk to dd1 about a total ban at home, don't want a repeat of last year when ds sang the 'alternative' jingle bells, willie on the motorway and all every time we went into Sainsburys.

Grin at 3DuracellBunnies - we had that version last year ENDLESSLY too! I tried to get them to sing 'Batman smells, Robin laid an egg, The BatMobile lost a wheel and the Joker got away' instead, but they much preferred the willy version... Grrrr!

Have decided to complain to the school. Have spoken to some other parents and they all agreed that they weren't comfortable with teachers teaching those terms to 7yr olds. Dh works in the field and feels that it is a child protection issuue, although I'm sure their intent wasn't bad. Sent an e-mail which I imagine will prompt some action, we were in hysterics writing it, hope I can keep a straight face when I see the teacher/HT. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be one of her usual teachers as she didn't know their name. By the very nature of choir they sing the same songs each week until they learn them, so decided best to make the school aware of the issues.

Oh I will tell dh procrastinator because he only has training in it and works in the area, so obviously you know better. Would you want an adult teaching your 7yr old songs about sexy underwear? None of the parents I spoke to were happy abouut it. We were in hysterics because it was so funny when it was written down, but probably wouldn't have been if our 3 year old ds had asked his teachers about what it meant. We haven't asked for heads to roll, just not to sing it again.

My DS1 sings a version of that, but it is 'Superman flies through the air, in his sparkly underwear'. Could be that some of the children have adapted the lyrics from what they were originally taught.

If it's the song I think it is then it's called cocs cola came to town. W used to suing it with seven year olds when I worked at a camp. Some of us changed the lyrics to 'bright red underwear', could you suggest that as an alternative?

No, three children independently told their parents that they were taught 'sexy underwear' and the teacher told them the word was 'a bit cheeky'. Obviously not willing to go into a more detailed explaination. We don't know who the 'teacher' was, dd knows all the regular teachers as it is a small school, but didn't know his/her name. Would be fine with sparkly underwear, and it doesn't take too much imagination to make the song 'safe'.

Singinggirl: the camp version is sexy so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they were taught if it were by somebody who had taught it to older kids tbh! I know many people who just didn't think about it until after the fact and having it pointed out to them. Those camp sings become rote after a while.

The but that would make me feel uncomfortable is that they'd told the children it was cheeky, cleary it was pointed out to them otherwise they wouldn't have picked up on it.

I'd never heard of this song, so looked it up and found it on the UK Guiders website! Maybe you should cc them when you e-mail the school.

How much did your DH actually know about the song before he made his declaration? Or did he just not like the word 'sexy' in a song?

It's a bit of fun, the kids think they are singing something a bit naughty, let it go.

Don't presume to know my background. I too have had extensive training in child protection but y'know whatever makes you happy.

That's not to say I don't think it's inappropriate but a quiet word is all that's probably needed.

Plus it's in a song - the teacher isnt teaching your child about sexy underwear, it's a line in a song, which should have been adapted granted, but let's not make out its something it's not.
