My 13 month old was given a shape sorter for his birthday with an age of 12months plus. This morning he was happily playing with his toys when i heard a funny sound, i looked down and he had one of the shapes in his mouth the whole thing! my first reaction was fright and i manged to get it out and ds was obviously unharmed. Now i know its probably impossible for such a thing to go down his throat but surely it shouldnt be able to fit in babies mouths at all?? AIBU?

Babies learn about shape by putting things in their mouth. As long as it's not small enough to swallow, it's fine.

Frightening as it is.......YABU. There are loads of things which are dangerous and can fit into a baby's mouth. Thats why babies of this age require loads of supervision. I remember DS at that age eating something which should never be eaten......9 years later and I still shudder at the thought of it! Shock

I think that's dangerous! I know that it shouldn't be able to go down their throat and that they shouldn't be unsupervised but you were in the same room, it takes 2 seconds for a child to do something like that when you aren't looking, so no I don't think YABU

If that's dangerous, so is everything that is large enough for them not to swallow?

MickeyMousePals · 16/10/2012 11:42

hmm fair enough he does mouth EVERYTHING as babies do but his other shape sorter peices are big enough to chew on but not fit fully in his mouth, i suppose it wouldnt be small enough to swallow it was just the noise and look on his face that gave me a right, fair doo's :)

If it is not small enough to choke on I can't see how it is dangerous

I can see how it might be uncomfortable though!

I will remind him of this moment in his life once he is in his teenage years.

Wish I had had my phone with me when caught him. It would be the picture used for birthday banners and cakes Grin
