"Girls in Love" WTAF????

On CITV! now - i have just turned this off, admittedly based on the title (i coudlnt believe my ears) and the synopsis on the TV guilde.

Now forgive me, it might just be my dirty mind but it sounds like the title of a porn film (to be fair i was posting ona thread about porn but even so!). So after i have gotten over the initial shock i had a look at the synopsis - it is about teenage girls desperate to go to a party, fine - but then it talks about "taking things to the next stage with Liam" !!!!!!

Am i being totally niave? My DD is 8 and had just been watching something else (even stevens?) and this came on - she wasn't interested, thankfully, but i would have thought that something on a channel specifically aimed at CHILDREN i wouldn't have to sensor what she watches. I know my DD is probably a bit young for CITV but she has grown out of cbeebies a bit now.

Am i the only one who is perplexed adn a little disturbed by this? To be fair, ive not watched it, but from the description it seems wholly inappropriate. Or am i being an old prude?

It's a book by Jacqueline Wilson that's been around for years. I'd say it's more appropriate for 11-13 year olds though.

Well, when my DD1 was 11-13 (shes 22 now!) she certainly wasn't going to parties and even thinking about any sort of levels with boys let alone the "next level", i didnt think it would be sex actually. I would have hoped that things haven't degenerated to the point where 11-13 year olds would be "in love". I think it is really really sad.

13 year olds have boyfriends and think they are 'in love'. Remember it well myself with me and all of my friends at school. That's the age you start having marthon snogging sessions and some teenagers a bit more. Surely your DD went to school discos? I wasn't going to all nighters to be fair. That's a normal age for girls and boys to be more sexually aware of eachother as most have reached puberty. I don't find that shocking at all but agree it prob shouldn't be on CBBC if it's aimed at that age group.

It's not promoting 11 year olds to go to parties- it's explaining a teenage lifestyle that 11 year olds enjoy reading about.

I read all of Jacqueline wilson's books whilst still in primary school, as well as Judy Blume. They didn't make me act promiscuously. They are more grown up than a lot of books, but that's what young teenagers want.

Juniper I remember Forever by Judy Bloom. That was the young girls equivalent of 50 shades lol :)

Forever was actually a great book, which of I remember correctly and it is possible I don't because my friends mostly just read THAT page was a out a teenage couple in a relationship losing their virginity to each other.

Thats secondary school age. Its the kind of thing being done by some at that age so isn't totally removed from reality and its most definitely being talked about so is quite true to life and of interest to that age group. As another poster said its also not a reference to sex so I can't see what you're getting upset about for the targeted age group.

actually i think this raises quite an important point: for dcs who've recntly outgrown cbeebies theres quite a big gap in programming. cbbc seems to be endless talent shows & dragons den imitation - must be quite a rude awakening for kids who've been raised on abne & teal or mr bloom's nursery. surely the 7-10 age group deserves better?

I think that is one of the points i was trying to make really NFP, my dd is not interested in this sort of thing yet has grown out of (mostly) in the fecking night garden (thank the lord) She loves things like scooby do, but that is quite an oldie and goldie isn't it. I am in no hurry for my DD to "grow up" i think it all reflects how society pushes children into mini-adults before their time. Its much the same as the clothes thing, my dd is tall for her age and i have really struggled to find clothes that i feel are appropriate to her age.

Well that's nice for you and your DD but surely you don't expect everyone else to be the same?

zombieplanmum I am 34 so was 11-13 a long time before your DD. We were interested in boys and going out with each other and snogging and as I said previously some were going a bit further (not sex - well ceratinly not at 11). It's not society, it's hormones!! Girls and boys have fancied each other at that age from the dawn of time and they have also wanted to be grown up before their time. Your DD is possibly the exception to the rule. It's all completely normal. Also, as a parent do you really know how your DD was when she was with her friendsat 13. If you do you are also an exception as most kids of that age let their parents know what they want them to know and no more!
