To think this is a scam?

DP is looking for a new car and has found a 11 plate golf for £2,900 on gumtree. The normal price for this age golf is £10K at least.

He wants to check it out but I don't see the point of wasting time and money to do it as I think it's a scam. AIBU?

Message the seller, the seller maybe emigrating and wants a quick sale or maybe he/she has left the 1 at the begining

Well they claim they are moving abroad but why wouldn't they go to we buy any car who will give them closer to 2.9k

Theres a good chance it has been in an accident/still on finance/stolen.

Aren't there scammers who then nick the car you've turned up in when you meet them in a dodgy car park to view said bargain car? Sure I saw it on Watchdog or something.

The first line of the ad says 2011 Golf, under year of manufacture it says 2009!
The picture of the car is a Golf GTi and the ad makes no mention of that!

On the second picture it reads and I quote "Please send me at: (person's email address). Do not reply me through websited because I don't receive your message."

It is obviously a scam!

This is 100% a scam.

The scam could be that they owe loads for the car on finance.

You give them £2.9k for it. They scarper off abroad with your money then the finance company come and take the car back.

There are loads of other scams with cars, too. It could be stolen and have false plates on it.

I dont know anyone who uses Gumtree anymore, because as it is so unregulated it has become a hotbed for scammers. I might buy something for £20 on there, but not a penny more.

If something is going to be popular and worth alot of money then surely it is worth the while of the seller to invest a little money to sell on Ebay for example, in order to get the best possible price?

My parents once put an ad on Loot for an old Nissan people's carrier that said it was £50 instead of £500. They had to keep the mobile switched off for a week

Theives use Ebay too. Theives sell car parts on there after stealing the car and breaking it up. It is everywhere on the net at least.

I've told him to steer clear. Even if all the checks came through clear (not likely), there's still something up with this.

I changed the story a bit to be less recognisable. It was a friend and his gf who were actually looking at the car. I warned them it was dodgy as hell!

They turned up and the man told them to see the car they had to transfer a "good will gesture" of £200 into his account. Apparently friends phoned the police but DP didn't know what happened after that.

Oooh gawd, crazy con artistes out there Make my blood boil.

I can't believe they thought even for a second the ad might be genuine though.

I wouldn't trust anything on gumtree whatsoever, it's full of scams
