To want to look round junior school before applying?

Ds is currently in Y2 at an infants school. I have to apply for his next school in the next couple of months. There is a junior school which most children go on to but I have never visited it and feel very uneasy about sending ds to a school that I've never seen. Although this junior school is our catchment school there are others nearby that I could apply to (if there was space...)

However, I seem to be the only mother of his peers who feels like this and I'm starting to feel like I might be a bit precious. I think I need some perspective! It isn't silly to ring them up and ask to visit is it?

No of course it isn't silly. Why wouldn't you want to see it? I'm sure someone would be happy to show you around.

I don't know of anyone who wouldn't want to check out a school first.

That's what I thought! Thank you. I think I've just started to doubt myself being surrounded by people doing things differently.

I used to work in junior school that was right next door to the feeder infant school, but we always did tours for prospective parents at this time of year, it doesnt matter how close it is, or how many children from your school go there, of course you still want to see it!

Definitely ask to look round. The school should be quite open - there should be no secrets.

So long as there is someone free to do it, you should be able to request a visit.

I've had parents come into my classroom when I've been teaching if they are moving to the area and trying to make a decision about which school to send their child to.

Thanks everyone for convincing me I'm not mad! Just rang and they were lovely, have an appt to go in and see the head and a look round.
