To be so nervous about going to my first spin class?

I have been a member of a gym for ages, and going reasonably regularly. I wouldn't say I am particularly fit, but I'm not really unfit either.

I get nervous about going to classes for the first time on my own anyway, but I am so nervous about it, I asked if it was for all abilities and it is, but I hope I don't completely embarass myself by looking really unfit or something.

I am going to make myself go, but already feel nervous and it's not till next week! Please feel free to tell me to get a grip!

Get a grip!

arthurfowlersallotment · 13/09/2012 12:13

You'll be fine- just sit at the back and bring a big bottle of water.

Oh and padded cycling shorts are a good idea as spinning can give you a sore fanny be painful.

Get a grip. Nobody will be looking at you, anyway. :)

I DIED at my first spinning class. I am a ghost :o

Don't worry. I've been the least-fit person in a spin class before and the instructor was good at picking up on different abilities (eg when she said to stand up or to increase the bike's resistance, she also said that we could stay seated if we wanted). Maybe she wasnt as drill-seargent like as some, but I found it fine. My tip is to take a spare towel to drape over the handlebars for sweat.

dexter73 · 13/09/2012 12:36

Take a towel and water - I am dripping with sweat when I go to spin! I found when I first started that I had to learn to pace myself so that I wasn't dead halfway through the class. I took it easy for the first half and then if I felt I had some energy left I upped my pace for the last half. I never look at anyone else as I am too busy trying not to die!

Good Luck - I couldn't walk after my first class!!!

Don't push yourself too hard, as your legs will give-way when you get off the bike at the end of the class - that will be embarrassing!

I love love love spinning but..........it takes a while to get used to it.

You need about 3-4 sessions I would say before you can write it off and say you dont like it.

Go at your own pace, some people cant come out of the saddle and climb in the first few sessions so dont be disheartened if you think people are better than you....just concentrate on your work out.

Yes, your legs will feel very heavy so beware if you have to go down any stairs - hold onto the bannisters.

I love spin though and go at least 3-4 times per week, it certainly gives a good workout. Depends massively on the instructor and music though so hopefully you will get a good mix.

Enjoy :)

Spinning is a piece of absolute piss.
Whats the worse that can happen just stop if it gets too much.

thebeesnees79 · 13/09/2012 13:25

I love spinning (not at the minute as I am 36 weeks pregnant)
but the classes are normally done in the dark. Get a bike at the back of the room and go at a pace that's comfortable for you. don't kill yourself lol. also when the instructor says to add some resistance do it till your at your limit, don't over do it.
she will probably advise you to stay seated when the class are doing jumps or riding out of the seat. Listen to your body and enjoy :)

thebeesnees79 · 13/09/2012 13:26

oh and make sure you have water, its a must!

waterlego6064 · 13/09/2012 13:32

I almost vomited the first time I did a spinning class.

Don't worry though, I'm sure you'll be fine.

littlemisssunny · 13/09/2012 13:37

Thanks for the replies, got some good tips! Though you are supposed to be encouraging me, not scaring me even more!!

I want to at least try it a few times, and if I don't like it at least I have tried it. very worried about having a Bridget jones moment and falling over when I get off the bike.
