To be annoyed that taxi ranks don't let families in first.

More like a rant really, sorry if it was covered before.

When we came back from holiday with the Eurostar, we went to the taxi rank. I had DC3 on the sling on my front (4 months), a backpack on my back and the babybag on the side, while holding the hands of DC1 and 2 (aged 2 and 4). DH had 2 large suitcases, a backpack and bag. I told DH we will go to the front immediately because priority is given to families and seriously with all our baggage you could tell we were not taking the piss.

When we got there, there were the paralympic guides helping people get into the taxis, when she turned to us and asked : 'Oh sorry, who came first'. There were these Carrie Bradshaw-like fashionistas to go in front of us. I told the guide that we just came in, but usually families with babies usually go first. She told me she never heard of that, and that unless we were disabled or something..........
Then one of the fashionistas took a look at all our baggage and said it's fine we can go, at which her friend said : 'Oh no, are you sure?'. Eventually we were let in, but I could not help but say to my husband, one of the fashionistas look great on the outside, but just cold on the inside. What kind of inconsiderate society have we become?

In France, there are signs all over main taxi ranks, that you let the pregnant, disabled, families with babies and tots, etc. go in before. We even naturally get called to the front by the usher as we arrive.
I realised that people in london are less keen, one day we did that, and some guy rushed to the taxi to go in front of us, and the taxi driver turned him away and told him : 'don't you see those people need more help?'.

Even before I was pregnant and had kids, I always left the lift, seats etc. to the mums and elders, so all this behaviour surprises me.

Maybe if you had been on your own with three children & a load of baggage but otherwise I really can't see why?

I don't think it should be an automatic rule though.

schobe · 10/09/2012 11:41

I have never heard of this. Really?

So having kids lets me jump queues? Possibly only in your fantasy world I'm afraid. And maybe France if what you say is true.

Aboutlastnight · 10/09/2012 11:42

I don't expect to go to the front of a taxi rank just because I have decided to have three children.

schobe · 10/09/2012 11:42

Lol at the fashionista embellishment too. I bet her feet were killing her in heels.

archilles · 10/09/2012 11:43

Yabu. I can't believe you even ask.

Of course you can't jump the queue just because you have children. Horribly entitled to think so.

oldraver · 10/09/2012 11:43

No, first come first served, you dont get to queue jump because you have kids. If someone is kind enough to let you go in front as they think you are struggling then so be it

DameEnidsOrange · 10/09/2012 11:43

So someone who has been waiting in a taxi queue for a while - possibly waiting to get home to their DCs should have to wait longer so that a newcomer with DCs gets priority.

Doesn't seem to happen where we are...

pigletmania · 10/09/2012 11:43

I have never heard of that. We usually pre book a taxi from the airport to home, and they hold up a sign as we come into arrivala

MrsKeithRichards · 10/09/2012 11:43

Yabu, very unreasonable.

ByTheWay1 · 10/09/2012 11:43

Nope me neither.... I have 2 and would wait my turn.

Trills · 10/09/2012 11:44

It's a queue.

The people who got there first, go first.

Unless the people at the front choose to let others go ahead of them.

That's how queues work.

No matter how much you disapprove of the footwear of the people in front of you.

severinofinn34 · 10/09/2012 11:44

It's your choice to have children, I've never heard of preferential treatment for families in taxi queues.

I also think your attitude to these 'fashionistas' is a bit shitty. You seem to be making assumptions about these women based on the fact they're well groomed and sporting high fashion.

iseenodust · 10/09/2012 11:44

YABU You don't automatically get to go first but someone with good manners might choose to let you.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/09/2012 11:44

YABU - why would you expect to go first?

HairyPotter · 10/09/2012 11:45

Seriously? Hmm

BlackberryIce · 10/09/2012 11:45

Entitled much!

I don't expect to go to the front of ANY queue simply because I have children!! People would get nowhere if that were the case, the amount if 'families' travelling around!

Is this for real?? Hmm

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/09/2012 11:45
Confused I've never heard this either. You queue like everybody else. I never expected special treatment when I had a child. I will now use the most overused word ever on MN and tell you you sound very entitled.
pigletmania · 10/09/2012 11:45

Many you should do the same, or the poor buggars waiting for a taxi will never get home with all the people with kids, disabled people going in front of them

VivaLeBeaver · 10/09/2012 11:46

I'd have been annoyed with you expecting to push in. Seriously, those fashionistas could be there all day if families kept queue jumping.

threeOrangesocksmorgan · 10/09/2012 11:46

yabu
why should families que jump
weird

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 10/09/2012 11:46

How ridiculous.
We queue here in Britain.
We don't want your fancy French ways here thankyou.

imonthefone · 10/09/2012 11:46

is this serious???

you cant queue jump because you have a family Confused

(what the f is a fashionista?)-whatever they are, they could have been waiting all day playing by your rules, if families kept turning up wanting a taxi Confused

MrsKeithRichards · 10/09/2012 11:47

Your digs at another women for giving a shit about what they were wearing is a bit crap as well.

severinofinn34 · 10/09/2012 11:47

MrsKeithRichard completely agree... jealous much OP

DougalMcDougal · 10/09/2012 11:47

Jesus.

Entitled or what.

I don't want in a queue because PFB.
