About a rogue catapillar

DS1 was just eating some sugar snap peas and found a catapillar inside one. It is alive and happily crawling around.

The problem is, I don't know what to do with it now. Normally I would put it in the garden, but the peas were from Kenya and I don't want to unleash an apocalyptic biohazard upon the north of England.

AIBU to put it in the garden?

Oooh, what an interesting dilemma. I don't know. Google it maybe?

Although I am a bit bored today and also in the North and an apocalyptic biohazard sounds rather exciting.......

I'm sure someone who has something helpful to say will be along soon.

Keep it in one of those plastic tanks with lids. Your DS can watch it grow up and when it turns into a butterfly you can release it if it is one we get here anyway (they migrate!), or take it to a butterfly sanctuary which would be a great day out for the family too!

My parents did this when we were little, it was great fun!

Unless a whole army of them came on on the same shipmen and all your neighbours are putting them in their gardens, then the chances of your caterpillar finding another of the same species to mate with and unleash Armageddon are slim.

And army is actually the collective noun for caterpillars, I just looked it up :)

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 08/09/2012 13:46

yeah, but it may cross bread , and then well, doesn"t bod well for us !

fragola · 08/09/2012 13:47

I've looked for it on google and I couldn't find it. I've put a photo on my profile page if anyone is interested.

Unfortunately hand rearing the beastie is out of the question - I'm scared of butterfiles Blush.

Who knows how many sugar snap catapillars Sainsburys have imported?! Maybe an army of them is just around the corner Smile !

Blooming heck Fragola. Just seen pic of sugarsnap intruder. I do not like the look of it. What if you let it go and it turns into this

Start with local Environmental Health Department. Say that it came from Kenya and take it from there. They probably won't do anything about it though.

How big is the caterpillar? Don't know anything about them, am just interested.
