I've had a facebook account for ages but never really used it. So I thought I'd tidy it up and un friended some people I haven't seen in ages who used to be friends.

Just been tonight and I've got a message from one of them saying it was good to hear from me etc. I haven't sent her a message as didn't want to get in touch with me so how the hell as she 'heard from me'.

Think I need to keep away from Facebook. The annoying thing is I only went on it after the lonely thread and haven't heard from anyone near me!

Deactivate and forget about it. It's crap.

ShellyBoobs · 07/09/2012 22:35

Too thick for Facebook? Shock I don't think that's actually possible!

A high level of intelligence is a prerequisite of Facebook usage.

You should bear in mind that it was actually designed with cretins in mind and is populated entirely by said fuckwits.

WorraLiberty · 07/09/2012 22:41

Just message her asking what she means.

Lolwhut · 07/09/2012 22:50

Just permanently delete the account. LikeThis

Keep in contact with your real friends by phone and email and free yourself from the evil clutches of Facebook. Smile

I know Facebook can be good in some circumstances. I used it when I lived abroad and it was a good way to keep in contact with family, however, when I moved to the UK I stopped using it and happily deleted it. MN is much better

SisyphusDad · 08/09/2012 19:23

If you can ask that question, you're not too thick for Facebook, you're too intelligent!

Sorry.......to those mumsnetters slagging off Facebook, could you clarify for me the difference between mumsnet and Facebook?

I like to think I am reasonably intelligent (prob kidding myself) but I barely understand facebook. When my father died, a rl friend sent me a pm on FB which I didn't even see or read for about three months because I had no idea it was there! Felt AWFUL!.

larks35 · 08/09/2012 23:06

I'm too lazy for facebook. My last update was after DD was born 5 months ago promising to be a better facebooker. I really intended to use it like some of my friends use it and keep people up to date with my mundane life. It hasn't happened so I think I might now bail out of it altogether.

I do know that de-friending someone does not alert that person to your rejection it at all. You just appear faded in their friends list.

Nice, so what you hate facebook - doesnt make people who use it "fuckwits" - nice. Ah well no doubt this thread will be yet another boring "Oh I hate fb" and "oh so do I" type posts. Yep we all have an opinion but "fuckwits" thats just nasty.

mercury7 · 09/09/2012 01:21

I agree that 'cretin' and 'fuckwitt' are overly harsh terms to use... vacuous attention seekers covers it adequately :o

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmm · 09/09/2012 01:32

I use it for : FB games, FB selling pages/groups, nice way to get local bargains, and the rows on the pet selling pages, to post funny or humorous e-cards, and for the parenting blogs

Oh dear..I am a fuckwit Grin

Ah well

shesariver · 09/09/2012 10:28

I dont think Im attention seeking, vacuous, a fuckwit or any other term of abuse people here can up with, just a normal person with a busy life who enjoys it, say the same way as someone enjoys Mumsnet. Its all relative. Just love all the judgey posts here about it. Grin

Mumblepot26 · 09/09/2012 23:03

I am eternally astounded by the level of hatred non facebookers have for Facebook? What's that all about?

reddaisy · 09/09/2012 23:08

How was it designed for cretins? IIR It was designed for students at Harvard. They are well known for being morons who have contributed nothing to society.

reddaisy · 09/09/2012 23:09

IIRC not IIR. Clearly I am not a Harvard graduate!

mercury7 · 10/09/2012 00:32

I dont think it was designed for cretins, it just seems to attract them, or rather lots of profiles seem somewhat cretinous...it's all the oversharing, the posting of trite trivia as if it was interesting, the naff little clichés and catch phrases.

Toe curling

mercury7 · 10/09/2012 00:35

besides, the internet was originally designed for military use, now it's full of porn and pointless arguments on forums

go figure..

jaggythistle · 10/09/2012 02:32

there is a lot of crap posted everywhere on the internet, fb is nothing special.

i use it solely to keep in touch with real life relatives and friends, they almost all live far from me and i don't see them much in rl.

It's great being able to keep in touch so easily.

i also use it to post pictures of the dc for the grandparents.

i doubt you're too thick OP!

i do wish they would stop always changing the layout just when i get used to it though...

janji · 10/09/2012 03:50

I use Facebook as alternative to txting for close friends and family and never accept friend requests from anyone else (miserable hit that I am)!

notsofrownieface · 10/09/2012 04:43

Nice. Hmm

How about the fact that people use it as a means of keeping in touch with people around the world?

Portofino · 10/09/2012 06:49

Your FB experience is based on who your friends are. If they are all cretins and fuckwits well then FB will reflect that.

lljkk · 10/09/2012 07:45

There's loads I don't know how to do on FB because I just don't go on very often. UpLoading & captioning pictures a bit of a headache.

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmm · 10/09/2012 13:40

Pics on FB is a bit naff its so complicated unless its via instagram ect

I frigging despise timeline

lljkk · 10/09/2012 14:45

I hate new layout, too. I can't figure out what's what on it, what the person themselves most recently posted, the page is too busy with bits of info & I want to hide it all away rather than study each individual pretty corner of it to find their latest update.
