To think NMs shouldn't be quite so surprised?

Doing some searches on google for something completely unrelated to this thread threw up a link to a discussion. So, I realise it's poor form to have a thread about a thread (about a thread!) but are we really such a bunch of scary women witches ?

YABU I hate this playground bitching about netmums. I don't particularly like their forums and prefer it here. But, why is it some mumsnetters have to get all superior about the netmums? And to actually link to them from here? Ooomph...

Sunnywithachanceofshowers · 04/09/2012 23:27

I don't think so :)

I laughed when a poster described us as the Sun, and NM as the Daily Mail.

I think we're more Guardian / Telegraph (delete as applicable)

greencolorpack · 04/09/2012 23:32

sunny I read the Guardian and in the Guardian I never or hardly ever read anyone using the word "Chav" as if it's an accepted term but its on here all the time. I'm not from Netmums, or any other site, but this place is not like the Guardian. I admittedly only read it once a week, mainly the supplement, the family section and not much else but still.

Maybe the Torygraph talks about Chavs like they are an accepted term?

cocolepew · 04/09/2012 23:44

Most of the posts I read on your link were supporting mn, not much bashing going on.

DisabilEightiesChick · 04/09/2012 23:51

People do post on both, as well. Anyone would think it was Israel and Palestine sometimes from the way each 'type' of poster is discussed. In the thread linked to in the OP there are numerous people saying they post on both. So it's a bit daft to build up grand theories of what an NM or a MN poster is like, as if they are opposed in every way.

MmeLindor · 04/09/2012 23:59

So this is a thread about a thread on NMs that was about a thread on MN about the differences between NM and MN.

And to be fair, a lot of the posts on that thread were pretty much saying live and let live.

I don't think MN is better than NM, just different. I prefer it here, but there are plenty who prefer NM. I truly is a matter of personal preference.

BaronVonAwesome · 05/09/2012 00:08

I didn't know what NM stood for. Damn you, OP! You made me click! I'll never get that time back, ever.

McHappyPants2012 · 05/09/2012 00:17

there is MN and NM end of.

i dislike the heavily moderated site that is NM where you cant even type fuck thats why i stay here.

i have also tried bounty and other parenting fourm, i just prefer MN

MardyBra · 05/09/2012 00:26

Grin at MmeL's thread about a thread about a thread about...

Vive la difference with regards to NM. I think there is absolutely space for both sites. I know there are some parents who use both, but in general I think it's probably better if the two "factions" have their own space.

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 05/09/2012 00:41

I only read first page, may not agree but I admit I giggled at the poster who said NM are more intelligent and articulate because we all swear too much which clearly makes us extremely uneducated. It's quite a contradiction because of how many 's and ways around the swear filter I've seen all over their boards when I had a good look around to see if I wanted to join. Hmm A tad hypocritical, or just blinkered?
I rolled my eyes at the fact apparently some of you don't even like your children.

Other than that, I don't really care. NM isn't for me. Nowhere enough in depth conversation for me and too heavily moderated. The tickers creep me out a lot. TBF, they creep me out on any site that has them. I don't like that people put their children's picture, full name, date of birth along with where they live for the entire world to see. I think that's really wrong and at best, stupid.

/rant. That's hardly NM exclusive though.

It takes all sorts though aye? I'd rather posters not comfortable with MN stay on NM and vice versa. That's the beauty of the internet, there's a place for everyone.

NM isn't for me and yeah, some of the stuff there really annoys me but I don't really get the constant feuding between the sites? Confused

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 05/09/2012 09:06

From the last page, and picking up a comment made by MrsDV:

One comment was, "It's like walking into the comments section of the daily mail and being beaten around the head with a copy of take a break."

Well, yeah, to an extent. But I like the comments section of the Daily Mail, and I like Take a Break.

Love this!

SailorVie · 05/09/2012 10:10

I particularly liked the NetHun who said that Mumsnetters didn't really seem to like being parents that much. Yep, that's me Hmm

Moominsarescary · 05/09/2012 10:12

And that we are common/chavvy because we swear

ElectricSoftParade · 05/09/2012 10:18

NM wasn't for me mainly because of the bloody awful tickers and, of course, not being allowed to swear if I wish to.

Not the end of the world not being able to swear but, as I am an adult, I prefer to be able to if it is something I want to type.

And, again, I FUCKING HATE THE FUCKING TICKERS. FUCKING HORRIBLE THINGS.

Apart from the above, I have no other opinion of NM Smile.

catgirl2012 · 05/09/2012 10:18

I do love that "they must be common because they swear" thing

Vair funny :)

But I have seen that thread linked to before and it does get tedious. I don't like NM as I don't like the tickers, the heavy moderating and I do think its very JK but I just don't go on it. It's just personal preference.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 05/09/2012 10:18

I'm on that thread! I use both, chat and news here but I find local and drop in clinic on nm useful.
The text speak on there irritates me but theres stuff here that bugs me too. Each to their own.

ElectricSoftParade · 05/09/2012 10:19

Also, I am very common.

'Trying to be cool because they swear' yes, yes, thats exactly right...Hmm

Wigglewoo · 05/09/2012 10:36

I like both and post on both :)

ScarletLady02 · 05/09/2012 11:12

I'm on that thread...I like both sites for the reasons I stated on there. I don't have a ticker and very rarely say "hon" (I won't say hun on principle) Grin

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 05/09/2012 11:25

Aah, fuckem! I like MN. NM is pants!

ChazsGoldAttitude · 05/09/2012 11:32

I thought very posh people were the real experts at swearing.

In that case I'm a fucking duchess.

More seriously, if they like NM better than MN then good luck to them I really don't care. I prefer MN because it suits my personality better but I don't expect everyone to think like me.

I think its reasonable to assume that most people on MN will prefer it to NM and most people on NM will prefer it to MN. There is a reason why a lot of people are on one site not the other.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 05/09/2012 12:18

I'll be honest... I just really dislike pink websites! Grin

I am going to a local nethun meetup with a friend who is a nethun though. Though I have warned the organisers that I'm more of a MNer. They all said they are too scared to venture over here!! Hmm

TroublesomeEx · 05/09/2012 12:32

Well I've read the first page of the post she linked to, and tbh I can't see the problem.

People have mentioned not being allowed to swear and tickers but it's all lighthearted, good natured and a bit tongue in cheek.

I prefer it here because it feels more, um, 'intellectual'. Even when it isn't.

I don't like all the bunting and the pretty colours, or the tickers and sparkles.

I've looked at it for the local info stuff but I'd never read the threads - I agree, the kisses and huns and the signatures are all too much and fussy.

Surely it is just personal preference?!
