YANBU get an answer machine and screen your calls, saves talking to them.

CoolaSchmoola · 30/08/2012 21:34

YANBU - register with the Telephone Preference Service and get the calls stopped altogether Smile

devonshiredumpling · 30/08/2012 22:10

just went on the telephone preference sight only to find out that we are already registered and sometimes when my brother phones his number does not show (he lives in canada)

leave the phone on the side an walk away

Minshu · 30/08/2012 22:15

TPS doesn't stop all of these calls. I use "no thank you, good bye" as I put the phone down (or pass it to the toddler, if she's in a phone-mood). Callers don't get a chance for me to realise they are being defensive.

Someone on a previous thread suggested asking the caller for the password. I've not had a caller to try that on since then :(

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 30/08/2012 22:16

I've had lots of them. I just say sorry I don't accept cold calls (nicely) and hang straight up.

I had a charity door to door guy call round the other day. I opened the dining room window and said "we are eating our tea" he said "I'll be really quick" Angry what planet does he live on? Ooh yes, of course you'll get me to agree to a regular direct debit by interrupting my bloody dinner.... Ggrrrrr

Otheregos · 30/08/2012 22:29

The last time I got one of these calls I passed the phone to my 16 month old son...o and when I got really pissed off I took the phone in the loo with me and told them to listen to this and peed in their ear(not literally) yanbu these people fook me right off!!!

PatFenis · 30/08/2012 22:54

I get around 6 of these calls every bloody day - they are either the fully automated ones where you pick up and you get a recorded message from a PPI company or more annoyingly you pick up and there is a phone ringing at the other end grrrr! And they all tend to call when I am busy cooking dinner or getting my family fed ....FUCKERS!!!

Tortington · 30/08/2012 22:58

DS (19) answered the phone in jokey manner thinking it was a friend calling and introduced himself thus: " hello this is xxx car sales how can i help you today" it twas indeed not his friend but someone from a call centre....they apologised and stated they did not know the number belonged to a business Grin

i now have a NEW tactic for answering the phone

PatFenis · 30/08/2012 23:05

Oh Custy that has just reminded me of the time when my mobile rang it was an unknown number and I picked up to hear a really strange accent asking for me by name - my son is well known for making bogus phonecalls - I thought it was him and told the person to fuck off and hung up .....then my landline rang so I answered and got the same strange accent and laughingly told him to fuck off again.

It was my bank manager calling to discuss my loan agreement Blush

My dd is brilliant at dealing with them she talks as if she is interested then when they are getting excited says no they hate it, or if its something to do with money ppi etc she quizzes them how they know about her personal business they soon hang up.
Tonight I answered they started with their name and then said and how are you this evening Mrs adore, so I started listing illnesses and they hung up.

omfgkillmenow · 30/08/2012 23:12

reminds me of the time my pal booked a posh but small and exclusive hotel
then her husband rang and gave her a crank call
instead of doing 14713, she pressed redial, then when full spiel
you are a funking cunt etc
realised that was hotel woman she had just spoken to 2 minutes ago so would recognise voice
put phone down in panic
then had to phone back to apologise and explain Hmm awkward!!!

confusedpixie · 30/08/2012 23:26

Tell them that you're on the TPS list, they usually hang up on you as they know they aren't allowed to called TPS users. I have had one particularly vicious woman argue with me about my being on the list, insisting I wasn't, then telling me that if I was I couldn't have signed up long enough ago for it to have taken effect, then said I was lying when I said I'd been on it for six months, etc. But mostly they do just hang up!
