October half term - where would you go?

Hi - we are desperate to get away as haven't had a holiday in 2 years.

We are thinking of trying to go somewhere warm for October half term - me, DH and Dd aged 8.

Maximum 4 hour flight I would think - all inclusive would be good.

Open to suggestions and recommendations.

Thanks.

Canaries - we went to a lovely spot in the north of fuerteventura at Easter and looking forward to going back

Primafacie · 27/08/2012 18:14

Can I second that? Desperate for some advice too :)

Katz · 27/08/2012 18:16

Morocco

sugarice · 27/08/2012 18:17

We're hoping to go to the Algarve, it's still very warm in October apparently but don't know about AI.

iknowwho · 27/08/2012 18:18

Portugal is nice in October.

Hulababy · 27/08/2012 18:19

Canaries - pretty much guaranteed weather
Majorca - been in Oct half term and was warm enough to go in sea but not guaranteed, could be chilly still
Morocco - this is somewhere I fancy and think weather is supposed to be good; there are some good family adventure type holidays out there too if you fancy something a bit different maybe.

Hulababy · 27/08/2012 18:19

lol Katz - a possibility then?

notnowImreading · 27/08/2012 18:20

Marrakech - very exciting to look around, beautiful weather, nearish, not too expensive. Essaouira on the coast also beautiful with massive (windy) beach and interesting medina. Very 'foreign' so interesting enough for kids even if not doing kiddie things.

have had a half term holiday in crete and it was fab, still pleasantly warm, three and a half hour flight, warm sea, much quieter than in the summer but still busy enough to find everything you need.

we're going to Turkey in October to <a class="break-all" href="http://www.firstchoice.co.uk/holidays/turkey-izmir-holidays/kusadasi/aqua-fantasy-aquapark-hotel-and-spa/?ib_id=First_Choice&ic_id=Hotel_Units_Broad_Match&ig_id=30078_-aqua_fantasy&ik_id=aqua_fantasy_hotel&im_id=ppc&is_id=Google&it_id=EF&iu_id=Broad&gclid=CJOxiIquiLICFcEOfAod3DUA4A&www.firstchoice.co.uk/holidays/turkey-izmir-holidays/kusadasi/aqua-fantasy-aquapark-hotel-and-spa/?ib_id=First_Choice&ic_id=Hotel_Units_Broad_Match&ig_id=30078-_aqua_fantasy&ik_id=aqua_fantasy_hotel&im_id=ppc&is_id=Google&it_id=EF&iu_id=Broad" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here. Looking forward to it.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 27/08/2012 18:48

I'd go for the Canaries or Cyprus. Both of these places don't have the end of season feel other destinations have in October. The most important thing to check out for that time of the year is that the pools are heated. My friends went to Turkey last October and said the pools were all far to cold to swim in and were completely empty.

cathers · 27/08/2012 19:00

Playa blanca in lanzarote. Warm, quiet, good hotels.
Been to Morrocco in October before and was starting to get chilly but may have been unlucky.

Katz · 28/08/2012 08:16

hula - would love to go, maybe next year!

Downnotout · 28/08/2012 09:10

The only place within that flying time with virtually guaranteed weather is the Canaries. Cyprus could be borderline as half term this year goes into November. My parents live in Turkey and say it would be too cool for pools by then, although you could be lucky, but certainly not guaranteed sunshine. Same with Morrocco and very chilly at night. Also you would either love or hate Morrocco, it can be a real culture shock and some people have felt uncomfortable going out of their hotels.

I would say mainland Spain, Balearics and Portugal are also out as while it could be lovely and sunny, it could just as easily rain for a week at that time of year.

We have been to Tenerife at that time and had fantastic weather and other friends who swear by Lanzarote. Fuerteventura can be very windy.

Costa Adeje in Tenerife is nicer than Las Americas and has some good AI hotels. Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is very family friendly too.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 09:21

I live in Scotland so any temperature over about 15 degrees would be warm enough for the pools in Turkey! Average temperatures for October are in the 20's so not too cold hopefully

Hulababy · 28/08/2012 09:22

Def Katz :)

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 09:22

p.s. our October break is in the middle of October and we fly out on the 13th.

northcountrygirl · 28/08/2012 09:36

We went to agadir in Morocco one October half term and it was very hot but I wouldn't recommend it. We were ripped off by so many people that we ended up pathetically grateful to the odd few people who DIDN'T rip us off! It's totally widespread - shops, taxi drivers, stall owners, tour guides, baggage carriers...

Also the men were totally inappropriate around my daughters. My youngest was 2 at the time and has almost white blond hair and big blue eyes. She did look very cute. Men were shouting across the street to my her - saying they loved her and wanted to marry her etc. We had strangers coming up to her, kissing her, trying to pick her up, squeezing her cheeks. Even women were crossing the street to touch her hair. It was very overwhelming for her.

We've also been to Lanzarote at the same time of year. It was quite hot - low 30s most days. It was the First choice all inclusive in Playa Blanca and I would definitely go there again.
