Got to be a bit careful in case I out myself, so not too many details, but someone I know has a son who has broken his leg badly. He is nine years old and was at the park with some friends when he .... and the story changes at this point! For the first few days the story went, that he had fallen over a stick, just a stick, a plain old stick. This was seen as a source of hilarity (probably not the right word) that he could do so much damage by falling over a STICK. Now, the injury is a bad one, he has pins in his leg and he will be uable to do all the things he enjoys for some time to come. (Lots of sympathy for little boy) but suddenly he no longer fell over a stick, now he tripped over uneven matting at the local playarea, meaning that SOMEONE is to blame, and now there's possibly money involved and a court case to pursue. AIBU to hope, that if this is a fraudulent claim, that they get caught? (even if I won't do anything about it myself)

I very much doubt they will get anywhere, I think you use such things at your own risk.

I hope at no point do they try to get the chid to lie, that would be horrible.

Maybe he did trip over matting but there was confusion at the time, maybe someone went back and saw that indeed the faulty matting had caused the accident. You're presuming a lot here, and of someone who's a supposed friend?

Cheeky cow, its stuff like this that makes the council have less money for playground maintenance, meaning that they get into disrepair and cause real accidents or even worse they close them.

its near impossible to get a child to stick to a story. if most children are asked tha same questions in differet ways. they get mixed up and ed up telling the truth.

minikimmi - I wasn't there and don't know what happened which is why I clearly stated "if this is a fraudulent claim" and neither did I claim that she was a friend. There were however plenty of witnesses who will be able to testify if necessary.

yabu. unless you know without a doubt they are intending to make a fraudulent claim,there could be many reasons for initially thinking it was a stick.

I don't see it as strange to notice such a change in account of an accident several days after, or think that indicates any diminution of sympathy for the boy.

Any claim would require the production of full medical notes, for circumstances of accident will always have been asked. Sadly, as coming up with a variant version for an insurance claim is, I understand, a common attempted fraud then any discrepancies will be checked. They may find it difficult to find someone prepared to handle a claim unless there is a very good explanation. Assuming that OP knows enough of the circumstances in the first place, and whether any parts were garbled and at which stage.

It is possible to hurt yourself tripping over a stick. I trip just walking sometimes

As for the claim. If they do make a claim for compensation i would report them.

I wouldn't report them, as I don't KNOW anything, other than what I have been told by the mother. I just hope that IF it is fraudulent that they get caught. If I knew and could prove anything concrete then I may have been tempted.

Maybe the stick was caught in the matting that could of been uneven?? Who knows?? Maybe someone has now 'damaged ' the matting so that it looks uneven, who the heck knows! If they're lying they will probably get caught out!

Council owned parks/play areas are wise to this kind of thing and have stringent six monthly checks (or are supposed to). If they make a claim and the park has the relevant checks it's unlikely that the claim would go anywhere or if it did they may find out it was a stick not the playground flooring.

Either way the poor little lad sounds like he is suffering and that type of injury sounds rather painful. Hope he feels better soon.
