Chewing gum and under 4's ?? <judgey>

Just been to the shop.

Mum of two kids in there told them both to pick some sweets, boy (about 3 poss 4) chooses chewing gum.

The till lady scans it and mum give it to boy who opens it and starts chomping away and then give a piece to his sister (about 2) . Mum saw, said nothing.

Now I have a 4yo and would not dream about giving him chewing gum, for a few reasons. Main one would be the choking hazard of a child running around with gum in their mouth.

I will fully admit to my judgey pants being hoisted, but it did make me wonder about what others think. It just wouldn't even occur to me that chewing gum was a small childs treat. Confused

YANBU. Choking hazard and getting it stuck in hair etc. Totally stupid.

FalseStartered · 23/08/2012 10:18

i judge everyone who chews gum

it's revolting stuff and is frequently chucked on the floor for innocents to stand in

Sossiges · 23/08/2012 10:19

Haven't got my judgey pants on today (so uncomfortable) but wouldn't give small kids chewing gum for same reasons (also no nutritional value, wears down teeth and ends up on street), so YANBU

YANBU - its foul.I use I remember when hubba bubba came out, we would put the whole packet in our mouths and try to blow big bubbles till our jaws ached.

My niece used to come out with me a lot around the age of 3. My mil used to bring her to the car chomping on chewing gum. I used to make her take it out. Too much of a choking hazard. Was hard to explain to my dd who was 4 at the time why she couldn't have it when her cousin who was younger did. I hate chewing gum anyway and dd, now 8 still doesn't really like it although she has tried it.

YANBU.

Me too, False.

Yukky horrible stuff. It is banned from our house and car.

gamerwidow · 23/08/2012 10:27

Im not judgy about what kids eat at all but even I think that's stupid and irresponsible

TheCunningStunt · 23/08/2012 10:27

My two get it. DS gets violently car sick. If we drive anywhere he needs medicated up to his eyeballs. We have discovered that chewing on minty chewing gum can stave of sickness so we can go 30 minutes from home without dosing him up. Which is brilliant. As he gets a bit, I give a bit to dd who is only just 3. They have never chockedShock. It's not the devils foodstuff you knowGrin. So YABU

TheCunningStunt · 23/08/2012 10:28

ChockedHmm choked!

BonkeyMollocks · 23/08/2012 10:38

Ah see, now Cunning I see where you are coming from. If it helps sickness in a car the fair enough.

But just giving it to your kids like sweets if just stupid imo!

Oh dear. In no way is gum appropriate for a child that young!

I see gum as a necessity at work when spending hours speaking to people in between drinking coffee but not as a SWEET!

TheCunningStunt · 23/08/2012 10:43

I agree that its not a sweet.
